On the eve of a quiet trade deadline, John Lackey faced Mariners' ace Hisashi Iwakuma. This one was tight for the whole nine innings and then some. That's right folks; another extra-inning game...and another walk-off. One of the focus points of the game was Pedroia starting to heat up and turn the corner at the plate.  After going 2 for 4 with three RBI at the plate last night, Pedey topped it tonight with an absolute rocket over the Monster, ending up 2 for 6 with two runs scored and three RBI Prior to the Mariners series, he was in a rough stretch going 5 for 43 over 15 games. However, Pedroia struck out in a big spot in the 9th inning on a close-call, foul-tip play. John Farrell came out to argue, but it looked like Pedroia never got a piece on the replay. Lackey hit a few snags this game, especially in the 6th inning, but was overall effective. At one point, Lackey got peeved over walking SS Brad Miller and let out his typical "Lackey Angry!" yell. Former Angels teammate and catcher Mike Napoli came over from first and tried to calm him down. It's pretty interesting Napoli can still talk some sense into him. Lackey rebounded and finished the night: 7 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K on 95 pitches. Junichi Tazawa entered the 8th inning and let up a shot to the bullpen from 3B Kyle Seager, tying the game 4-4. Tazawa has been iffy as of late. In the month of July, Tazawa has thrown 9.1 innings allowing five hits and four earned runs. Koji Uehara came in and threw two flawless innings...what's new with this guy? High-fives! Matt Thorton, Craig Breslow, and Drake Britton helped in extra innings and were very effective (although Thorton scared us a bit). One standout play in extra innings was Jacoby Ellsbury's clutch grab in center field to get Thorton out of a jam in the 11th inning. Jarrod Saltalamacchia almost launched one into the Monster seats in the 13th, but it fell short since he made contact at the end of the bat. Then in the 15th with the bases juiced, Stephen Drew ripped a ball down the right field line and Pedroia crossed the plate for the winning run. Not bad for the new everyday SS, right? The series wraps up tomorrow, where one of the game's top aces in Felix Hernandez counters Ryan Dempster for the home team. First pitch is at 7:10pm. Boxscore
