The Red Sox took the lead early and went on to an easy 8-2 win over Seattle tonight at Fenway. After a 1st inning Mariners run, Brandon Workman settled down to pitch six strong innings, walking one and striking out nine. Workman faced a jam in his last inning with the bases loaded, but managed to get out of it by striking out Michael Morse and Justin Smoak back to back to end his night. Craig Breslow and Matt Thornton pitched perfect innings, with Thornton looking his best in a Red Sox uniform, striking out two Mariners. Pedro Beato gave up a run in the 9th, but managed to finish things off with a strikeout with two men on. The Sox offense came mostly from the top of the order with Shane Victorino and Dustin Pedroia combining for five hits. Pedroia put together his first solid game at the plate in weeks. He had a two-run homer and a run-scoring single...even though he ran into an out trying to stretch it to a double. We'll take it. Jarrod Saltalamacchia added a moon shot in the 8th to right center. It was just his 9th homer of the year, but a reminder that the power is there. Maybe these assorted days off are a good thing there, Mr. Farrell. Workman's strong game prompted a few people on Twitter to make the point that if he can keep it up, he ends up being a pretty cheap trade deadline "acquisition." Of course, there are no guarantees he can keep it up, but if he can hold steady until (if?) Clay Buchholz returns, that's all we need. Speaking of the trade deadline, buckle your seat belts: The PawSox inexplicably pinch hit for Jackie Bradley, Jr. in the 6th inning of tonight's game. He had no apparent injury, and while Sox scribes breathlessly went to Twitter to inform the masses that no deal was close, it's unrealistic to suggest he's not at least being talked about. Perhaps Cliff Lee is headed our way after all? Box score
