Josh Beckett pitched eight solid innings and the Boston Red Sox rebounded from a rough road trip with a 12-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday in their home opener. The Red Sox began their 101st season at Fenway Park. Boston entered the game with a 1-5 record that included a 10-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers in which Beckett (1-1) allowed five homers. But he limited the Rays to five hits and one walk. He struck out just one, getting Carlos Pena in the eighth and extending his streak to 281 games with at least one strikeout since the start of his career. Only Dwight Gooden has a longer streak to begin his career, 349 games from 1984 to 1997.

Josh Beckett's 'Perfect Outing' Jumpstarts Red Sox Season and Possibly Pitcher's Cy Young Candidacy

Josh Beckett's first start of the season was a travesty, if not worse. The Red Sox No. 2 starter went four and 2/3 innings, giving up seven earned runs and five home runs in a 10-0 whalloping in Detroit. Six days later, with Boston reeling from a 1-5 start to the 2012 season, Beckett delivered potentially the most important performance of the Red Sox young season. Beckett went...

Josh Beckett Could Benefit From A Strong Outing On Friday For Many Reasons

It's his second start of the early season, but it’s a crucial appearance for Josh Beckett. As he starts Friday's home opener, there will be pressure. Not just from the 1-5 start. Since this marks Beckett's first home start since acknowledging improper behavior in the clubhouse, he is taking the next step in mending the fences with the fan base. Upon recognizing the...

Vote: How Many Games Will Josh Beckett Win in 2012?

The Red Sox have gotten off to a pretty slow start to begin the 2012 season, and poor pitching is a big part of the problem. Boston's starting rotation has been all but mediocre over the first six games of the season, barring a pair of solid outings by Opening Day starter Jon Lester. If the Red Sox expect to compete for a spot in the playoffs come Septemeber, then their pitching...

Josh Beckett Leads 'Crazy Eights' Attack as Red Sox Cruise to Another Home Opener Win (Video)

Josh Beckett went eight strong, Kelly Shoppach had a career day against his former team and the Red Sox claimed their eighth straight Opening Day win at home on Friday. Of course, since Jacoby Ellsbury left the game with a shoulder injury, we'll have to tamper our excitement just a little but. But there's still some cause for celebration since the Sox picked up their second...

How's the Thumb, Josh?

Here's hoping that Josh Beckett''s thumb gets another look before he gets the ball tomorrow. Something was wrong in his first start. Bobby V said "not much of an injury" when it first came up, but let's get a second opinion. Thanks to the days off, it would be easy to slot in Buchholz. And don't, don't, let Josh make the call. He's the most competitive...

Beckett Sharp, Ells Hurt As Red Sox Beat Rays 12-2

On a day when at least some members of Red Sox Nation voiced their frustration over last September's epic collapse, Josh Beckett shrugged off the boos he heard during the Fenway Park Opening Day pre-game introductions and pitched 8 strong innings to help lead the Red Sox to a 12-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.Coming off his first start of the season in which he surrendered...

Red Sox News & Notes - 4/14

When Josh Beckett was introduced during the opening ceremonies for the 2012 Boston Red Sox home opener at Historic Fenway Park, there were a smattering of boos mixed in with some cheers. By the time he walked off the mound in the 8th inning, there were no boos heading his way. Just a standing ovation from the crowd. Beckett's pitching along with the day his batterymate Kelly...

Bobby Valentine Applauds Josh Beckett on "Perfect Outing", Still Concerned About Jacoby Ellsbury (Video)

The Red Sox finally broke out of their early season slump on Friday, and manager Bobby Valentine seemed pleased by the performance. Valentine credited starrting pitcher Josh Beckett with what he deemed a "perfect outing" during Boston's 12-2 victory. Beckett allowed just one run over eight innings in the game, and threw consistent strikes all day long. The one drag...

Recap: Sox bats, pitching finally come together

Avert your eyes, ladies.  (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images) Earlier in the week Jon Lester bemoaned the fact that the Sox had yet to get the pitching and hitting going in the same game. They've finally figured it out, in today's 12-2 thrashing of the Rays. Josh Beckett was in complete control all afternoon.  He wasn't overpowering by any means, but he kept the Rays bats...

Bobby Valentine Could Be In Position To Return to 12-Pitcher Roster, Promote Utility Man

BOSTON –– Josh Beckett’s outing against the Rays could have ramifications on the roster. If the right-hander doesn’t experience any issues with his right thumb, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine could send down one of his relievers –– there are 13 pitchers on the club –– in favor of an extra utility man. "It could be more of a resolvable situation, but I’m still...

Red Sox Shine in Home Opener

Johnny Pesky was on hand while Tim Wakefield and Jason Varitek tossed out the first pitches to Jim Rice and Dwight Evans.  The stage was set to welcome Fenway Park into its 100th season.  Josh Beckett lived up to the occasion and recovered nicely from his poor first start to pitch a gem at the Red Sox home opener.  After giving up a run in the second, Beckett settled in nicely...
