Boston's Jon Lackey retired the Pittsburgh Pirates on eight pitches in the first inning. Then he labored through a 35-pitch second inning. ''After the first inning being so quick, I definitely needed to throw a few pitches,'' Lackey said after the Red Sox routed the Pittsburgh Pirates 16-6 Thursday. ''It was more about getting up and down a couple times today. That was the biggest key for me.'' Lackey, who missed last season following elbow ligament-replacement surgery, was making his second spring training start. Pittsburgh took a 3-1 lead in the second when Brandon Inge and Clint Robinson singled, and Jared Goedert sent a curveball into the Red Sox bullpen beyond the left-field wall. Lackey threw only fastballs in his one inning last weekend against Tampa Bay. He mixed in offspeed pitches against the Pirates. ''I threw a couple good ones, hung a couple,'' he said. ''A good step in the right direction. I'm still lo...

Prospect Notebook: Looking at a Few 2013 Breakout Candidates

In 2012 the Pittsburgh Pirates featured two of the biggest breakout players in all of minor league baseball. Gregory Polanco and Alen Hanson both had huge seasons, propelling each hitter onto national top 100 lists. During Spring Training last year, I identified Hanson and Polanco as breakout candidates, after watching them for a few weeks. Polanco was crushing the ball every time...

Jameson Taillon starts today

After Gerrit Cole's Grapefruit League debut yesterday, Jameson Taillon will start against the Red Sox today at 1:05 PM. Taillon probably won't get many spring training appearances with the Bucs this year since he'll be joining Team Canada for the World Baseball Classic shortly, which is an even better reason to pay attention to him today.  You can read about Cole...

Mike Napoli Passes All Tests in Spring Debut, Veteran’s Comfort Level Very Encouraging

Mike Napoli aced every test slapped on his desk on Friday night. Napoli, making his spring training debut for the Red Sox, made a few plays in the field, contributed an RBI single to kick off Boston’s scoring and left no doubt that he’s healthy with Opening Day exactly one month away. Napoli was diagnosed with a hip condition known as avascular necrosis during the offseason,...

Jonny Gomes Cuts Knee, Receives Stitches After Crashing Into Outfield Fence

Will Middlebrooks‘ injury dominated the headlines following Wednesday’s game against the Orioles, but he wasn’t the only member of the Red Sox who came away from the spring training contest a little banged up. Jonny Gomes banged into the outfield fence and cut his knee, which required three stitches, according to manager John Farrell. The minor injury presumably occurred when...

John Farrell Not Ruling Out Chance of Jackie Bradley Jr. Making Red Sox’ Opening Day Roster

Jackie Bradley Jr. is one of the best prospects in baseball, but by most accounts, he’s not quite ready to hang around in the big leagues. After a quick start to spring training, however, the young outfielder may be making things interesting in Red Sox camp. Boston manager John Farrell was asked about Bradley Jr.’s chances of making the big league roster for Opening Day, and...

Mike Napoli Feels ‘Good to Go,’ Scheduled to Make Spring Training Debut on Friday Against Pirates

Mike Napoli continues to be pain free, so it looks like the training wheels are about to come off. Napoli, who did some more baserunning drills on Wednesday, is on track to make his spring training debut on Friday when the Red Sox host the Pittsburgh Pirates. Napoli, who was diagnosed with a hip condition during the offseason, has been brought along slowly by the Red Sox’ coaching...

Lowell says Marlins can win back angry fans

Mike Lowell grew up in Miami, helped the Marlins win a World Series and knows all too well about the franchise's tradition of humble payrolls and modest crowds. Back in uniform this week as a special instructor, Lowell says the team can win again and win back fans, but it will take time. And he sympathizes with South Floridians angry the Marlins this season will be near baseball...
