The Red Sox officially acquired closer Joel Hanrahan from the Pirates on Wednesday in a six-player deal with Pittsburgh. The Sox sent two of the players they acquired from the Dodgers in last summer’s salary dump — first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands and infielder Ivan De Jesus — to Pittsburgh, along with pitchers Mark Melancon and Stolmy Pimental. In addition, the Sox acquired infielder Brock Holt in the deal. The 31-year old Hanrahan is now the frontrunner to take over the closer position in the Sox bullpen, a spot previously held by Andrew Bailey (acquired from the A’s in a trade last offseason), who struggled on the mound and with injuries last season. Over the past two seasons, Hanrahan has recorded the fourth-highest total of saves (76) in the National League and compiled a 2.24 ERA, holding opponents to a .205 average against. He has been an All-Star both years. From the outside looking in, this looks like a steal for the Red Sox if Hanrahan can keep up his production. They have bolstered a bullpen that seriously needed help and did so without having to give up top-tier prospects.
