The Boston Red Sox clinched the AL East title on Friday night, getting seven strong innings from Jon Lester to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 and eliminate Tampa Bay from the division race. One night after securing their first playoff appearance since 2009, the Red Sox added their first division title since `07. Boston entered the night with a magic number of one -- meaning the next Red Sox win or Rays loss would clinch the division. Lester (15-8) allowed one run on five hits and two walks, striking out eight to win for the seventh time in nine decisions. It was his 100th career victory. Toronto pinch-hitter Adam Lind hit a two-run homer off Junichi Tazawa in the eighth to make it 5-3 before Koji Uehara got five outs for his 20th save. With the crowd standing for most of the final inning, he struck out Brett Lawrie to end the game and the Red Sox poured out of the dugout and bullpen. Dustin Pedroia had three hits for the Red Sox, who have won 19 of their last 25. Toronto starte...

Jacoby Ellsbury Resumes Baseball Activities For The Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox announced before Friday nights game that ailing center fielder, Jacoby Ellsbury, has resumed baseball activities. Boston's manager, John Farrell, acknowledged that the 29 year old took swings off a tee and began throwing again. Although Farrell and the Red Sox medical staff did not give a time table for Ellsbury's return, both did say that they was confident that...

Koji Uehara Jumps Up Onto Red Sox’ Dugout, High Fives Fans During AL East Celebration (Video)

The Red Sox won their 94th game of the season Friday. While impressive, that number pales in comparison to the number of high fives that Koji Uehara has dished out in 2013. Uehara has slapped hands with anybody and everybody during his incredible run as Boston’s closer. Sometimes, he even catches his teammates off guard with his enthusiasm. (Just ask Shane Victorino.) Uehara really...

Red Sox Win AL East, Go Champagne Supernova

Last night, the Red Sox put an exclamation point on their unthinkable comeback, winning the AL East just one year after schlepping through the ********* season of my lifetime. When the dust cleared last September, my only hope for the 2013 team was that they’d remember to put their pants on before taking the field; that’s what the Bobby Valentine Era reduced me to. But just...

Jon Lester went seven strong innings, and Koji Uehara recorded a five-out save to nail down the win. Uehara struck...

Lackey Shines; Sox Capture Playoff Berth, 3-1

(Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images)John Lackey was about as good as he's been all year—no-hitting the Orioles for 6 1/3 innings in tonight's 3-1 Red Sox win. The right-hander secured a complete game win giving up just two hits, and striking out eight. Both the no-no and the shutout were ended with a mammoth homerun off the bat of Adam Jones in the seventh. Boston started...

Best Record In Jeopardy; Sox Fall To Jays, 4-2

(Getty Images)Clay Buchholz lost for the first time this year and the Red Sox found their best record position in serious trouble in a 4-2 loss to Toronto on Saturday. Buchholz—who started the season 9-0—fell to 11-1 with a 6-inning performance in which he gave up just two earned runs. Most of the damage was done with two outs and nobody on in the fourth—when the Jays crossed...

Halley O’Brien Visits Yawkey Way to Find Fenway Park’s Best Beards (Video)

The Red Sox hosted “Dollar Beard Night” on Wednesday, and gave out $1 tickets to the first 4,000 fans who showed up with a real or fake beard on. The promotion was in honor of the 2013 Red Sox’ dedication to their unique facial hair. TV personality Halley O’Brien braved the beards of Yawkey Way on Wednesday, and encountered some of Boston’s most dedicated beard-wearers...

Shane Victorino Sits With Jammed Thumb As Red Sox Try Again to Wrap Up Playoff Bid

All right, let’s try this again. The Red Sox will have another chance to punch their ticket to the postseason Thursday night as they wrap up a three-game series with Baltimore. Because the Indians lost to Kansas City on Tuesday, the Sox now need just one win to clinch a playoff spot. With a pair of their usual starters — Jacoby Ellsbury and Shane Victorino –nursing injuries...

Red Sox Won’t Celebrate Clinching Playoff Berth

The 2013 Red Sox have done what so many thought was impossible to do in today’s era of baseball. No big stars, just a bunch of scrappy players pieced together, with some ace pitchers and a manager who some have said overachieved. The Red Sox are going back to the post season for the first time since 2009. Their Thursday night win over the Orioles led them to clinch a playoff...

Fer Sher!

Listen, I love what John Lackey has done for the Red Sox this year, but did you see him after the game? What a goofball. Other than characters in some eighties valley girl B-movie, who says “fer sher?” But whatever. I can’t believe I’m about to say this – that dude can pitch! The Lackster pitched a complete game two-hitter, allowing just one measly run. Throw in eight...

Red Sox Poised For First Division Flag Since '07

Blue Jay WayWhat better opponent to clinch the division against than the Toronto Blue Jays—they of the 70 wins and last place in the American League East? They are 2013's 'Team OverHype', picked by many to be at the top of the division. They are the 'Anti-BenCher' front office—doing a reverse salary dump with the Miami Marlins that netted them over-paid, under...
