After pitching well on Thursday night, Robert Manuel was optioned back to Pawtucket on Friday. Since July 3rd, Manuel has appeared in 5 games with the Red Sox. Over 7 innings, Manuel allowed 3 earned runs on 5 hits and had an era of 3.86. The Sox needed the roster spot for Fernando Cabrera, who was called-up from Pawtucket today to add a fresh arm in the bullpen. It appears that Manny Delcarmen will be activated tomorrow, so Cabrera’s visit to the major’s may be a short one. In the minors this season, Cabrera has gone 0-3 with a 3.50 era in 33 appearances, while striking out 50.
