The Boston Red Sox are preparing to open the season without closer Andrew Bailey, who was having a second opinion on a thumb injury that could keep the right-hander out for much of the year. Manager Bobby Valentine said Tuesday that he thinks Bailey will be out ''a while.'' Asked if that meant days, weeks or months, Valentine said: ''possibly all of the above.'' The nature of Bailey's injury is still a bit of a mystery. Valentine said Bailey doesn't know how his right thumb was injured. Bailey initially went to Boston on Monday to have it checked out, then traveled to Cleveland.

Who's it going to be if Andrew Bailey can't go?

So it's just about a forgone conclusion now that Andrew Bailey won't be able to start the season on the DL with a bad thumb. Prompting Bobby Valentine to throw out this Jay Leno esque joke,"No thumb wrestling's allowed. We took that out of the program. The worst thing about it is, the other old adage is they happen in threes. 'Stop it, mom. Don't say it again...

Red Sox April Schedule Adds Insult to Injuries

Thumb injuries to Red Sox pitchers Josh Beckett and the apparently 2-ply, tissue paper made, Andrew Bailey have the rotation and bullpen in a state of flux. An ominous beginning to a 2012 season for a team who desperately needs to get over last season’s September collapse could do without. Prior to the 2011 season the Red Sox were highly touted and many predicted 100 plus wins...

Boston Red Sox 2012: Put CSI on Call
