With manager Terry Francona and general manager Theo Epstein out the door, could slugger David Ortiz be next?

Ortiz told ESPN that he's unsure if he wants to be back in Boston next season because "There's too much drama."

Ortiz remarks came on the same day that Epstein had reportedly agreed to a five-year deal with the Chicago Cubs and hours after a Boston Globe story detailed turmoil in the Red Sox clubhouse.

"I have been thinking about a lot of things," Ortiz said. "I don't know if I want to be part of this drama for next year."

Affectionately known in Boston as "Big Papi," Ortiz defended Francona, noting that it was not the manager's fault for Boston's staggering September collapse that cost the team a slot in the postseason.

Of the reported drinking beer and playing video games in the clubhouse during games by starters Josh Beckett, Jon Lester and John Lackey, Ortiz said that was common when Boston won World Series titles in 2004 and 2007.

Ortiz, who will turn 36 on Nov. 18, turned out to be among the biggest bargains in baseball history when he signed with the Red Sox for $500,000 prior to the 2003 season.

He went on to belt 320 of his 378 career homers and put up six 100-RBI seasons in nine years with Boston.

A free-agent-to-be, Ortiz uttered the words that makes any Red Sox fan cringe: He would consider playing for the archrival New York Yankees.

"Who doesn't want to be in an organization that everything goes down the right way," he said.
