As the West Coast road trip continues into Seattle, the Red Sox will begin the series without star centerfielder and All-Star snub Jacoby Ellsbury. Ellsbury will get the night off and Daniel Nava will take over to captain the outfield in Monday’s game against Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners. Nava –coming off a four-hit performance Saturday against the Angels– will lead it off for the Sox, followed by Jonny Gomes and Dustin Pedroia. Mike Carp will get the start in left field and will bat sixth in the lineup behind first baseman Mike Napoli. Carp has notched just three hits in his last 16 at-bats, and will have to face another tough arm Monday. Hernandez is 8-4 with a 2.69 ERA, but will have to slow down the best hitting team in baseball. The 3-4-5 combination of Pedroia, David Ortiz and Napoli have accounted for 22 home runs and 166 RBI’s on the season thus far. Also looking to contribute will be third baseman Brock Holt, who will be playing in his third career game for the ...

Andrew Miller To Have Season-Ending Surgery: What Now For the Red Sox?

Well this isn’t good. During Saturday’s game against the Angels, Red Sox left-handed reliever Andrew Miller was pulled with an injured left foot, unable to walk off without assistance. Today, news has come down that Miller had sustained significant damage to the ligament in his foot, and would have season-ending surgery. Make no mistake; while Miller may not be a big-name star...

Squanderpalooza Results In Stunning Loss, 9-7

(Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)Everyone will focus on the bullpen meltdown in analyzing Boston's most devastating loss of the season, 9-7 in 11 innings last night. With two outs in the ninth, Alex Wilson and Koji Uehara could not protect a four-run lead. That said, it was the countless missed scoring opportunities early in the game that should have turned this into a laugher for...

Jonny Gomes More than Just a Body to Fill the Roster

I can admit it: I was wrong about Jonny Gomes. After being critical of the Red Sox signing the outfielder in the offseason, he has proven me wrong by playing a big role for the first place team. Last week he hit his second walk off home run, and his third walk off hit of the season. I did say he was just a reliable body the Sox signed, but he has played in 63 games and has delivered...

Red Sox Face Questions in Bullpen, Team Could Become Active As Trade Deadline Nears (Video)

Just when it seemed like the Red Sox were finally out of the woods when it came to reliever questions, a dark cloud settled back over the bullpen. Reliever Andrew Miller will undergo a season-ending foot surgery to repair ligament damage in his left foot, leaving Boston with Craig Breslow as the only left-handed reliever on the roster. Sox general manager Ben Cherington talked with...

In Depth With Jarrod Saltalamacchia

Jarrod Saltalamacchia has come a long way behind the plate. “Salty” isn’t among the elite at his position, but he’s developed into a solid defensive catcher. He is certainly among the most cerebral. Once looked at as an offense-first backstop, he is playing a key role in the success of a Boston Red Sox pitching staff that is exceeding expectations. Originally a first-round...

Four Real? Red Sox vs Mariners 7-8-13

Pete Lepak RedSoxLife Staff Writer Game 91: Sox lose a laugher 11-4 Ugh. It's just not getting any better for Jon Lester in 2013. Lester went 5+ innings, giving up five runs on nine hits in the loss to the Seattle Mariners. His ERA stands at a bloated 4.60. While many of the Red Sox starters are getting better, the former ace is getting worse. Yes, he was squeezed a bit by...

Red Sox Recap: Sox survive Seattle slugfest

The Guru Contributing Writer So much for Seattle's Safeco Field being a "pitchers park". The Red Sox and Mariners combined for 28 hits, 19 runs and six home runs as the Red Sox pulled out the 11-8 win. David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Mike Napoli, Shane Victorino and Jackie Bradley Jr all went deep for the Red Sox. Check out JBJ's home run that proved to be...

Red Sox Rumors: Boston 'open' to upgrades in bullpen, third base

The Boston Red Sox, sitting five games ahead of the AL East, are 'open to possible' upgrades at third base and in the bullpen, according to ESPN's Buster Olney. The Red Sox don't figure to be aggressive buyers at the deadline, but just appear open to the possibility of getting upgrades. So what kind of bullpen guy are the Red Sox looking for? Somebody asked Pete...

Report: Red Sox Open to ‘Possible Trade-Market Upgrades’ in Bullpen, at Third Base

There are inevitably going to be a lot of rumors leading up to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, and this one is rather vague. It’s still worth passing along, though, as it gives an indication of what the Red Sox might be looking for while trying to improve their roster. According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Red Sox are open to “possible trade-market upgrades” in the...

3 Stars of the Game: Game 90

Ryan MacLeod Contributing Writer The stage was set perfectly for the Red Sox to show America that they are indeed the best team in baseball, the Sunday Night game on ESPN. Its the game that everyone that is a baseball fan watches, and the Sox came out flat, getting only 5 hits in 9 innings, scoring 0 runs. Lackey pitched well, a good showing from him back in his old stomping grounds...

Jason Bay Recalls Memories With Red Sox, Calls Transition From National League to American League ‘Tough’ (Video)

When the Red Sox traded away Manny Ramirez, they received Jason Bay. Bay reported to Boston from the Pittsburgh Pirates immediately and was in the Sox lineup the next day. He had a remarkable first few games with the ball club and, though he was only with Boston for two seasons, Bay has fond memories with the team. Bay talked about them with NESN’s Jamie Erdahl before the Sox matched...
