Remember when the Red Sox used to have little trouble with the Orioles? From 2005-11, the Sox never dropped a season series against Baltimore, including winning 16 of 18 in 2009. However, the Orioles flipped the script in 2012, winning 13 of 18 matchups. This year, the Orioles lead the season series 5-2 entering a three-game set over the weekend at Camden Yards. Baltimore will be around a -140 series betting favorite. Boston last saw the Orioles from June 13-16 in Baltimore. The Orioles won three of four in that one, their sixth straight series win against the Red Sox. Baltimore is even better now after making two big trades to bolster its pitching staff to go along with one of the most potent lineups in baseball behind Chris Davis and Manny Machado. On July 2, the Orioles got starter Scott Feldman from the Cubs. Feldman is a middle-of-the-rotation pitcher who induces ground balls. He has been solid in his four starts with Baltimore, going 2-1 with a 4.79 ERA and one home run allowe...

Source: Boston Red Sox expected to sign Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (UPDATED: Phillies sign Cuban star)

It was eleven years ago that the Boston Red Sox desired Cuban star Jose Contreras, but lost out on him at the last minute to the rival Yankees. Just another example of them getting shafted by the Yankees. This loss led Team President Larry Lucchino to throw a chair across the room and coin the “Evil Empire” term for the Yanks. It appears that won’t be the case this time around...

Jose Contreras Impressing in Pawtucket, Could Be Bullpen Option for Red Sox (Video)

Jose Contreras‘ first two outings in the Red Sox system could not have gone much better. The 41-year-old, who boasts a potentially devastating forkball, did not allow a hit or a run in either appearance for Triple-A Pawtucket, striking out seven and walking three over 3 2/3 innings. Minor league production by no means guarantees success in the majors — Contreras himself put up...

Tillman terrific in Orioles' 6-0 win over Red Sox

Chris Tillman has become the pitcher the Orioles can depend on. Tillman worked seven exceptional innings allowing just two hits and winning his 13th game of the season. His great outing enabled the Orioles to break their three-game losing streak with a 6-0 win over the Boston Red Sox before 39063 at Oriole Park on Friday night. The Orioles (58-46) had been held to six runs in their...

Jose Iglesias’ Rough Patch Creates More Questions About Infielder’s True Offensive Potential

We all knew that Jose Iglesias would come back down to earth at some point. We just didn’t know how rough the landing would be. Iglesias entered July hitting .409 (54-for-132) after a stellar June earned him American League Rookie of the Month honors. As expected, Iglesias has cooled off, but the drop-off has been so drastic that we’re left wondering what exactly the Red Sox...

Jose Contreras, Brandon Lyon Could Become Bullpen Options for Red Sox If Nothing Materializes on Trade Market

The Red Sox made a pair of, “Hey, why not?” moves last week. We might soon get a better glimpse of whether or not they’ll actually pay off. The Red Sox signed veteran relievers Jose Contreras and Brandon Lyon to minor league contracts, with the hope being that each has a little something to offer at a reasonable cost. Obviously, the signings didn’t send shock waves throughout...

Tito talks Pedroia, takes friendly jab at second baseman

(Photo courtesy of Boston.com) Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer During Terry Francona’s time as manager of the Boston Red Sox, it was no secret that he and Dustin Pedroia had built more than just a manager-player relationship. From playing cribbage on flights and before games to the constant...

(AP Photo/Michael Dwyer)Thursday's washout at Fenway offered Boston the opportunity to tweak its starting rotation for the next five days. Jacoby Ellsbury Back in Lineup, Felix Doubrount Takes Mound As Red Sox Look to Extend Division Lead

After watching Tuesday’s 6-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays from the dugout, Jacoby Ellsbury is back in the lineup Wednesday in his typical leadoff spot for the Red Sox. Ellsbury will be followed in the order by Shane Victorino, who gets the start in right field. Victorino has been in a bit of a slump over the past few weeks — notching just five hits in his last 24 at-bats — but...

Deal or no deal: Jacoby Ellsbury

Photo Courtesy of CSNNE Conor Frederick Contributing Writer Be prepared, Red Sox Nation. Jacoby Ellsbury probably won't be in a Red Sox uniform next season. His agent is Scott Boras, who will most likely get the best offer he can. John Henry told CSNNE that he isn't confident about getting an extension for Ellsbury like management was able to do for Dustin Pedroia, at...

Almost 9 Years Later, Red Sox Couldn’t be Happier A-Rod Deal Fell Through

It was December 2003, and the Red Sox had just lost the ALCS to the hated Yankees a couple months prior, but everything seemed to be going the Red Sox way. They had just traded for the best Shortstop in all of baseball, and once he worked out a restructured deal, he would come to Boston and a number 3 jersey with the name Rodriguez would be handed to him at a press conference. All...

Red Sox-Orioles Live: John Lackey, Chris Tillman Comprise Intriguing Pitching Matchup in Series Opener

5:54 p.m.: Daniel Nava will return to the Red Sox’ lineup Friday. Nava has only played in one of the last four games, and he was scheduled to sit out Thursday’s series finale against the Rays before it got rained out. Jonny Gomes has been given more of an opportunity lately, and John Farrell said that matchups have dictated his lineup decisions. Gomes is typically tough on lefties...
