DailyBoxscores.com:
The Boston Red Sox lost two minor league pitchers in Thursday's Rule 5 Draft.Tampa Bay selected lefty Cesar Cabral with the number 14 pick and then the Yankees selected righty Daniel Turpen at number 19. Turpen was the player received earlier this year when Ramon Ramirez was sent to the San Francisco Giants.
Per the rules of the Rule 5 draft:
If chosen in the Rule 5 draft, a player must be kept on the selecting team's 25-man major league roster for the entire season after the draft—he may not be optioned or designated to the minors. The selecting team may, at any time, waive the Rule 5 draftee. If a Rule 5 draftee clears waivers by not signing with a new MLB team, he must be offered back to the original team, effectively canceling the Rule 5 draft choice. Once a Rule 5 draftee spends an entire season on his new team's 25-man roster, his status reverts to normal and he may be optioned or designated for assignment. Here's the write up for each player from the very best in the Sox prospect business, SoxProspects.com:
Cabral: Lefty with a solid frame. and a 3/5 delivery. Pitches exclusively from the stretch. Fastball sits between 91-93 mph and tops out at 95 mph. Secondary pitches include an excellent 81-83 mph circle changeup, a mid-70s slurvey curveball, and a sharp 79-82 mph slider. Gets a lot of swings and misses with his changeup, which has nice downward movement. Excellent command and control, attacks hitters.
Turpen: Big sidearm reliever with a 93-94 mph fastball, complemented by an above-average changeup and an above-average slider. Induces a lot of groundballs. Works in the zone.
