With still no new news on the Mike Napoli contract situation, the Boston Red Sox made the signing of RHP Ryan Dempster official on Wednesday. To make room for Dempster on the 40-man roster, they designated RHP Pedro Beato for assignment. Here's the full release from the Red Sox: BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today signed right-handed pitcher Ryan Dempster to a two-year contract through the 2014 season.  A two-time All-Star, Dempster has made at least 28 starts and has won at least 10 games in each of the last five seasons since returning to the starting rotation in 2008.  His 3.74 ERA during that five-year stretch ranks 13th among Major Leaguers with at least 950.0 innings pitched. To make room for Dempster on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Pedro Beato was designated for assignment. Dempster, 35, went 12-8 with a 3.38 ERA (65 ER/173.0 IP) and 153 strikeouts over 28 starts last season, his 15th year in the Major Leagues.  He posted a 2.25 ERA (26 ER/1...

Ryan Dempster’s Ability to Take Ball Every Fifth Day Will Be Huge Asset to Red Sox’ Rotation (Video)

If there’s one thing Red Sox fans can be sure of this season, it’s that Ryan Dempster will be ready to take the ball every fifth day. Dempster, who has been a workhorse in recent years, was officially introduced as the newest member of the Red Sox by general manager Ben Cherington on Wednesday. The right-hander joins the Red Sox on a two-year deal, and should help bolster a rotation...

Ryan Dempster Brings Humor to Red Sox, Recalls Performing Standup Comedy in Boston Club (Video)

Ben Cherington thinks that Ryan Dempster is the kind of player who will embrace pitching in Boston. The 35-year-old may have limited experience pitching in the American League, but his seven seasons of 200-plus inning are certainly a sign of a quality arm. Red Sox Now caught up with Cherington and then Dempster, himself, who has some interesting memories of his past time in Boston...

Ryan Dempster Would Be Shepherd If He Wasn’t a Pitcher, Claims George Carlin Is Still Alive (Video)

Ryan Dempster is known around the Major League Baseball world as a jokester. His Harry Caray impression, for instance, is pretty well-known and popular and tends to follow him wherever he goes. Dempster will be bringing that humor to Boston, as the right-hander was introduced as the newest member of the Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon. As part of his introduction to his new city and...

Ryan Dempster Ready to Get Down to Work After Being Officially Introduced as Member of Red Sox (Video)

The Red Sox’ starting pitching was subpar in 2012, and general manager Ben Cherington is looking to make sure that isn’t the case against this season. The Sox officially introduced Ryan Dempster at a news conference at Fenway Park on Wednesday, and Cherington was quick to point out what exactly the team saw in the right-hander that made him an offseason target. Dempster, who...

Ryan Dempster Will Add Stability, Innings to Red Sox’ Rotation (Video)

Looking at the Red Sox’ rotation heading into 2013, the one thing the team was missing was innings-eater. Aside from Jon Lester and (arguably) Clay Buchholz, the team didn’t really have an established guy they could count on for a quality start every five days — until they signed Ryan Dempster. The 35-year-old may not be quite an ace, but he adds stability to the starting five...

Vote: Which Red Sox Starting Pitcher Will Win the Most Games in 2013?

Ben Cherington stood in front of the media on Wednesday to introduce his newest signing. Starting pitching, Cherington said, was one of the areas the club was looking to upgrade in the offseason. The way they plan on doing that, apparently, is to add veteran right-hander Ryan Dempster, who was introduced on Wednesday afternoon at Fenway Park. The veteran starter has seen varying...

Mike Napoli Deal With Red Sox Still In Limbo

News first broke of free agent catcher/first baseman Mike Napoli the Red Sox reaching a three-year, $39 million contract back on December 3rd. Over two weeks later, pen has still yet to meet paper. The deal reportedly hit a snag during Napoli’s physical, when questions were raised about the health of the 31-year old’s hip. A red flag was clearly raised in the process of closing...

Red Sox Add To Pitching Staff With Dempster, Uehara

The Red Sox have had one of the more disappointing pitching staffs in the American League over the past two seasons so it’s no surprise that they moved to try and bolster the staff early on in the off-season.  The Sox made the move to bring back former standout pitching coach John Farrell to manage the squad and he hired former White Sox coach Juan Nieves to coach the pitchers...

Checking in on the Napoli situation

Fox Sport's Ken Rosenthal provided a little update on the Mike Napoli contract... unsettledness(?) today. It's a fun little article in which Rosenthal lobs himself some questions, and then knocks them out of the park (pun most certainly intended): Just how bad is Napoli’s condition? Napoli, sources say, has a problem with one of his hips – a problem that led the Seattle...

In signing DH David Ortiz (2 years, $26 million), RF Shane Victorino (3 years, $39 million), starter Ryan Dempster (2 years, [...]

However, the calendar you see above was already printed before any of those transactions went...

MLB Rumors: Texas Rangers Finally Replace A Departed Big Bat And Sign A.J. Pierzynski

The Texas Rangers have had to sit back and watch the likes of Josh Hamilton and Mike Napoli sign with the Los Angeles Angels and Boston Red Sox, all while making little noise themselves this offseason. That is unlike the Rangers of the past few Winters, as they have been one of the more active teams in free agency, having signed players such as Adrian Beltre and Yu Darvish. But we...
