Normally when Clay Buchholz throws a gem like he did last night, we would start off with that. But as happy as we are about the outing from Buchholz and the fact that the Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 3-2, the news isn't all cute puppies and kittens. It looks as though the Red Sox will go through the rest of the 2012 season without their third baseman Will Middlebrooks who was hit with 96 mph fastball in the wrist. The fastball from Esmil Rogers was not intentional at all but nonetheless it's a costly injury for the Red Sox. The reports this morning are stating that WMB has a broken wrist and is likely lost for the season. It's also being reported that newly acquired Danny Valencia will be called up from the PawSox to replace Middlebrooks on the 25-man roster. WMB came up when Kevin Youkilis went down earlier in the season and played his way, a season early, on to the Red Sox roster for years to come. He's had a heck of a rookie season as he was...

Recap: Buchholz steps up again, Sox win 3-2

For a couple of weeks we've been discussing how Clay Buchholz has been morphing into the ace of the Red Sox staff.  Well, consider the transformation complete.  In a must-win game (let's be honest, they're all must-win at this point), with the bullpen in desperate need of some rest, Clay told everybody, "Sit down.  I got this." Clay pitched a complete game...

Red Sox Dwindling Playoff Hopes Rest Squarely on Right Arm of Budding Ace Clay Buchholz

Editor's note: NESN.com is going to tell the story of the 2012 Red Sox in Bobby Valentine’s words. Each game day, we will select the best Valentine quote that sums up the day for the Red Sox. It's impossible for a pitcher to carry the load for any team, mainly because playing once every five days doesn't have quite the same impact as that of a positional player. But...

Buchholz dominant in Red Sox win over Indians

CLEVELAND -- No one was more impressed than Cleveland Indians manager Manny Acta. He made that clear after Boston's Clay Buchholz dominated Cleveland's lineup with a two-hit complete game in the Red Sox's 3-2 victory Friday night. "That's the best game I've seen pitched against us all year and it wasn't even a shutout," Acta said. Buchholz...

Your Morning Dump... Where we have more praise for Clay

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Here’s a novel idea: Rather than relying on turnarounds from erstwhile aces Josh Beckett [stats] and Jon Lester [stats], maybe the Red Sox [team stats] should just clone Clay Buchholz. At this point, it may...

Report: Will Middlebrooks Out With Broken Wrist, Danny Valencia Likely to Replace Him on Roster

Will Middlebrooks' stellar rookie year may have met its end. Middlebrooks was drilled on the right wrist by a pitch in Friday night's win over the Indians and taken for X-rays. Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe now reports that Middlebrooks' wrist is broken, sidelining him immediately and likely leaving him out of action for the rest of the season since just seven weeks...

Danny Valencia Trade Looks Good as Third Baseman Steps Up With Will Middlebrooks Gone

The Red Sox' trade for Danny Valencia caught many people off guard at first. But exactly one week later, the trade has paid dividends -- just not under the ideal circumstances. With Will Middlebrooks likely out for the season with a broken right wrist, the Red Sox can turn to a capable third baseman to man the position. "What happened to Will is unfortunate," Valencia...

Will Middlebrooks Not Expected to Need Surgery After Hitting Disabled List With Broken Right Wrist

CLEVELAND -- After hearing a bone in his right wrist snap, Red Sox rookie Will Middlebrooks gladly listened to a bit of better news. Boston's third baseman does not need surgery. "We'll see how it goes for a few weeks," Middlebrooks said Sunday. "They [doctors] said it should heal just fine without surgery." Middlebrooks said he is "not sure"...

Middlebrooks' season likely cut short with fractured wrist

At first, Will Middlebrooks thought the ball hit his batting glove. That's what he hoped, at least. But the "crunch," as Middlebrooks described it, that he heard wasn't the velcro glove. It was a bone in his right wrist, fractured by a fastball thrown by Cleveland Indians reliever Esmil Rogers in the ninth inning Friday night. And with that, Middlebrooks...

Red Sox Live Blog: Scott Podsednik Returns to Outfield as Clay Buchholz Looks to Shutdown Indians

5:45 p.m.: It looks like Felix Doubront is going to be shut down, but not for good. Bobby Valentine told reporters in Cleveland on Friday that the 24-year-old starter will be skipped over in the rotation for his next scheduled start, in favor of Aaron Cook. Cook hasn't started since a dominant win over the Rangers on Monday and likely won't take the hill again until next...

Boston's Middlebrooks breaks wrist

Will Middlebrooks' fine rookie season for the Boston Red Sox is over. The third baseman was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken right wrist Saturday and Danny Valencia recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Pedro Ciriaco was in manager Bobby Valentine's lineup as the third baseman, hitting ninth. Valencia, acquired in a trade from Minnesota on Sunday, was expected...

Boston Red Soxs: Will Middlebrooks fractures wrist

His status on the season is unknown. According to Pete Abraham, ( @PeteAbe ) Will Middlebrooks will see hand specialist Dr. Thomas Graham in Cleveland today that will determine if the rookie...

Red Sox Live Blog: Franklin Morales Looking to Keep Up Sox' Winning Ways Against Indians

8 a.m: Clay Buchholz did all he could and maybe some more in getting the Red Sox out of their three-game slide on Friday night. But as the day turns anew, the ball will be handed to Franklin Morales to try and keep Boston's playoff dreams alive. Morales, who seems to be a lock to be in the Sox rotation from this point forward, was impressive in his last outing on Sunday against...

On DL, Boston's Middlebrooks not expected back

The Boston Red Sox placed third baseman Will Middlebrooks on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, and manager Bobby Valentine told reporters he probably wouldn't play again this season. Middlebrooks suffered a broken wrist when he was hit by a pitch by Cleveland Indians reliever Esmil Rogers in the ninth inning Friday. "He had a terrific run for us," Valentine said...

Your Morning Dump...Where we shouldn't rush anyone up from the minors

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Will Middlebrooks’ broken wrist sent the Red Sox [team stats] brass into a scramble yesterday, and one possible solution involved promoting shortstop Jose Iglesias from Pawtucket. Iglesias’ presence,...
