The Red Sox have a history of being big players in free agency. That trend could continue this offseason, as the Sox have plenty of money to spend after their midseason megadeal with the Dodgers. Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino dropped by WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan on Thursday to discuss the interesting offseason. While the Sox have yet to make a big splash, they’ve been linked to a number of players, including some of the open market’s biggest fish. Lucchino wasn’t ready to rule anyone or anything out when it comes to Boston’s spending plans prior to Opening Day. However, he did say that the Sox are trying to avoid signing players to long-term deals, as such contracts often hinder a ballclub’s financial flexibility. Lucchino said that the team is more concerned about the years on potential contracts than with the money that comes with signing a player. The Red Sox, of course, inked Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford to lengthy deals two offseasons ago, and were fortunate enough to trade away both contracts. It appears Lucchino and Co. aren’t looking to make the same mistake twice, even though they will remain aggressive. Check out the video above to hear more.
