Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Bobby Jenks apologized Sunday for his arrest Friday on muliple charges of driving under the influence.

Jenks was arrested at 12:24 a.m. by the Lee County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office and charged with one count of driving under the influence and three counts of DUI and damage to property.

“I am embarrassed by the situation and apologize to my teammates and to the Red Sox organization for any distractions I may have caused. I still need to let the legal process run its course and until it does, I will not be able to make any further comment,” Jenks said in a statement.

According to the police report, Jenks struck two vehicles with his Mercedes-Benz SUV and told officers at the scene that he had taken too many muscle relaxers.

The 31-year-old Jenks, who is recuperating from offseason back surgery, also was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with property damage.

Jenks underwent a pair of surgical procedures on his spine during the offseason. The second caused fluid to leak from his spine and led to an infection.

The veteran reliever was limited to just 19 games last season because of ongoing back pain. He logged a 2-2 record with a 6.32 ERA.

Jenks owns a 3.53 ERA and 173 saves for his career.
