TEAMS: Boston Red Sox, Washington Nationals, Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles

What is a platoon advantage in Major League Baseball? "The Book: Playing Percentages in Baseball" has some great information regarding this very topic. The basic gist of a platoon advantage is using more than one player on a part-time basis where you match them up in advantageous situations. This helps maximize their overall effect's on your team rather than using a single starting player at that same position. The most common way of doing this is naturally using a left-handed hitter versus right-handed pitchers and vice-versa with your right-handed hitters facing left-handed pitching. This is a practice normally used by the mid to small market franchises in the league, but the so-called "Empires" of MLB are asked to utilize these tactics during the season when injuries and other matters unfold.
