PLAYERS: Ken Rosenthal
TEAMS: Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox signed veteran catcher David Ross to a two-year contract, leading some to speculate that the team’s starting backstop Jarrod Saltalamacchia could be traded this offseason. However, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports the Red Sox had been shopping Saltalamacchia “for weeks” prior to the signing of Ross. For those wondering about #RedSox’s intentions at catcher, one rival exec says they’ve been shopping Saltalamacchia “for weeks.” — Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) November 11, 2012 The Red Sox entered the offseason with two potential starting catchers on their roster in Saltalamacchia and Ryan Lavarnway. While unproven, Boston reportedly has a strong belief in Lavarnway’s ability. Ross has spent most of his career as a backup, and while he isn’t expected to be a starter with the Red Sox, the team has said he will serve more than a reserve role. For his part, Saltalamacchia hasn’t been a slouch at the plate during his time with the Red Sox, hitting .222/.288/.454 with 17 doubles and 25 home runs last season. Despite being 27 years old and holding his own at the plate, Saltalamacchia is expected by many to be the Red Sox catcher dealt this winter given the team’s commitment to Lavarnway and the signing of Ross. Your Morning Dump...where Ellsbury is still the most important decision

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Depending on how you value Ellsbury, there are two ways to view this option. One, the Red Sox should trade him now before his stock drops further as his MVP-caliber season goes farther into the rear-view mirror...

Five Signings to Fix the Red Sox… Seriously

1. Re-sign David Ortiz: Yes, I realize this has already taken place. But let me tell you why this was so important. For the past two seasons, Big Papi has been a bit of a malcontent in the clubhouse because of a “lack of respect.” And I’m one of the few people who has been 100% on Ortiz’ side. The problem with the Sox has been an utter lack of respect fortheirplayers. I don’t...

MMO Mailbag: Trading For Saltalamacchia Or Lavarnway?

Alex asks… The Red Sox just signed David Ross as a catcher and are also said to be going after Mike Napoli. That tells me that Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ryan Lavarnway are certainly available. Which one would be a better target for the Mets and what would the cost be? Sean replies… Both of these players are interesting, but both have their issues and they would not be the final...

Red Sox, Ross complete 2-year deal

The Boston Red Sox have signed catcher David Ross to a two-year deal worth $6.2 million. The deal was reached over the weekend. Ross was in Boston for a physical this week before it could be finalized. Ross played 62 games for the Atlanta Braves last season, his 11th in the major leagues. He batted .256 with nine home runs and 23 RBIs. Atlanta went 54-35 in his starts at catcher...

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Red Sox investigating Mike Napoli

This Napoli-to-Boston speculation/reporting seems to be picking up speed. Ben talked about WEEI's report about the Sox' interest in Napoli, and now ESPN's Buster Olney follows up that the Sox have their sleuthing hats on again. The last time I remember the Red Sox being noted for doing "extensive background work," it was their infamous chase of Carl Crawford...

Former Sox drawing many suitors in the offseason

Like any baseball fan I've been spending a fair share of time on MLBTradeRumors this offseason, and I've been struck by the building interest in two former Sox: Kevin Youkilis and Jed Lowrie. Youk is a free agent and someone who many fans had hoped would return to Boston, although it doesn't appear likely. MLBTR lists six interested teams and Boston is not among them...

Rosenthal: Mets negotiations with Wright more advanced than with Dickey

While the Miami Marlins are in the headlines for dismantling the core of their team, the New York Mets are apparently making an effort to retain theirs.  Tonight Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports said that the team submitted a proposal to Wright and the third basemen’s reps made a counter-offer. #bbpBox_268557552298639360 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_268557552298639360...

Red Sox Sign David Ross

After a week of constant rumors surrounding the Sox, it looks like the team has made their first splash in the free agent pool. Red Sox sign David Ross

The Boston Red Sox have signed catcher David Ross to a two-year, $6.2mm deal, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. The deal could also allow the Red Sox to trade Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Ryan Lavarnway as Ross is slated to be more than a backup but not a starter. Ross who was a backup catcher in Atlanta was thrusted into a larger on the field role as Brian McCann seemed to be injured...
