Red Sox shortstop leaves game with concerning injury

The Boston Red Sox were hoping that having a fully healthy Trevor Story at shortstop was going to be a huge lift to their lineup for the 2024 season. But in the bottom of the fourth inning of Friday's game against the Los Angeles Angels, the rest of the team watched as Story had to leave the game due to injury.

Story attempted to dive for a ground ball in the hole at short, but he landed awkwardly with his left arm completely extended. Then he immediately started rolling on the ground in pain.

Story remained on the ground for several minutes before slowly walking off the field with his left arm hanging down.

Injuries to his right hand, left heel and UCL have limited Story over the past few years, taking a significant bat and glove out of the Red Sox lineup.

This season was supposed to be different. Now just one week into the season, the Red Sox have to worry about losing him for an extended period of time again.

It is even more disappointing because earlier in the game he gave them a taste of what he is able to do with his glove when he made this play.

Before joining the Red Sox prior to the 2022 season, Story was one of the league's most productive shortstops as a member of the Colorado Rockies. He has not been on the field enough or been 100 percent healthy enough to make a similar impact for the Red Sox.

And that does not appear to be changing anytime soon.
