This wasn't the first signing I expected the Red Sox to make this offseasn but that doesn't make it any less important. Boston has locked up second baseman Dustin Pedroia through 2014 with a 6-year extension. The extension is worth approximately $40.5 million and includes a club option for 2015.
In case you forgot, check out Pedey's resume:
2007 AL Rookie of the Year
2008 AL MVP
2008 AL Gold Glover
2008 AL Silver Slugger
The contract breakdown looks something like this:
Signing bonus - $1.5 million
2009 Base Salary - $1.5 million
2010 Base Salary - $3.5 million
2011 Base Salary - $5.5 million
2012 Base Salary - $8 million
2013 Base Salary - $10 million
2014 Base Salary - $10 million
2015 Club Option - $11 million (or a $500,000 buyout)
Next up is to sign Papelbon and Youkilis to long-term deals, and maybe throw some love Jon Lester's way.
