The Red Sox took on the Orioles, but once again fell in extra innings.  This season the Sox have remained winless in any game that has gone more than 9 innings.  Aaron Cook took the mound for the Sox and while he wasn't lights out, he did give the team a chance to rally back.  Cook gave up a single run in the first with an Adam Jones groundout.  Sox 0-1.  The Sox bats got that run right back in the bottom of the first when Lavarnway hit an RBI single.  Sox 1-1.  In the 2nd, the Orioles would grab the lead back with an RBI single from Machado.  Sox 1-2.  The O's scored another run in the top of the 4th when Mark Reynolds hit a HR to the Monster.  Sox 1-3.  The Sox tied it up when Danny Valencia hit a 2 run HR well over the Monster.  Sox 3-3.  Cook lasted until the 6th inning when he gave up a single and a double.  Cook was done for the night and Rich Hill was in the game.  Hill gave up a 2 run RBI triple to Flaherty to give the Os a 5-3 lead.  Hill was done and Mortensen was...

Taking Stock: Orioles - Red Sox series

After every series, we'll take stock of how each individual and group performance affects their overall value. Lineup Pedro Ciriaco: Pedro did well at the plate in 2 out of 3 games, which is an improvement of his 1 out of 4 against the Rays. Scott Podsednik: Now that's the Scott Podsednik we are used to seeing. He hit well from the top and bottom of the lineup....

Like Red Sox, Ortiz looking ahead to offseason

David Ortiz has been through a lot in nearly a decade with the Red Sox. He's earned two World Series rings and owns the club record for homers in a season. He suffered through a monumental September collapse last year, and has been sidelined with a strained right Achilles as the team faded out of the playoff picture this season. This winter, he'll likely experience something...

Recap: Iglesias got a hit!

Jon Lester pitched an OK game.  The offense couldn't get across the plate.  Sox lose 4-2  to Baltimore. The good news is that the Sox didn't lose this game in any kind of heart-breaking fashion.  Just a good old boring loss.  Not much to say about the game, really.  Lester threw 7 mediocre innings, giving up 8 hits, walking 3 O's with only 3 K's.  All 4...

James Loney’s Prime Decline

If the Red Sox have been one of the most disappointing teams in baseball this year, then waiver trade import James Loney has been one of its most disappointing and frustrating players. The 28-year-old first baseman entered his contract year with high hopes. He tallied 2.4 WAR last year in the best season of his career, and while his numbers weren’t all that impressive when placed...

Alfredo Aceves' Unpredictable Nature Gives Way to Another Unpleasant Loss for Boston

Editor's note: NESN.com is going to tell the story of the 2012 Red Sox in Bobby Valentine's words. Each game day, we will select a Valentine quote that sums up the day for the Red Sox. BOSTON -- Alfredo Aceves' season is spiraling out of control. Fresh off a late-game debacle on Wednesday against the Rays, the Red Sox reliever crumbled in the 12th inning of Saturday&...

Red Sox News & Notes - 9/24

Four starts ago, the talk around the Boston Red Sox was that Felix Doubront could be shut down for the rest of the season. After all, he'd never thrown this many innings or pitches in a season. Doubront fought for himself and told them he'd be fine. They should be glad he did. Yesterday afternoon in his final Fenway Park of the season, Doubront put together a gem as...

Doubront fans 11 to extend late-season surge

Tired? Who said Felix Doubront was tired? Despite having soared beyond his career-high total for innings in a season, and despite struggling badly for seven starts after the All-Star break, Doubront remained in the Boston Red Sox's rotation and tossed his third consecutive gem Sunday. Making his 28th start, Doubront took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, set a career high...

Tom Gordon gets his 42nd consecutive save

September 24, 1998 Red Sox reliever Tom Gordon records his 42nd consecutive save establishing a major league record. Boston clinches the AL wild card spot behind a pair of homers and four runs scored by Nomar Garciaparra. Author Stephen King would later write a novel titled The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, referring to his outstanding 1998 season with Boston and...

Sunday Red Sox Travesty - 9/23

After falling in extra innings yesterday, the Boston Red Sox look to avoid being swept this afternoon in the finale of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at historic Fenway Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Orioles television market, you can catch the game on MASN. If...

Your Morning Dump...where Pesky finally got the tribute he deserved.

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. The impact that Johnny Pesky made on the Red Sox during his 70-year career as a player, manager, coach and ambassador was evident on Sunday night when Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk walked onto the field at the...

Ever heard of Keury De La Cruz? Probably not, but take notice.

Overlooked by the likes of Bryce Brentz and Jackie Bradley, there was an outfielder in the lower minors leagues of the Red Sox system in Keury De La Cruz that had Greenville Drive fans coming out to watch each night. De La Cruz, 20 was one of the most improved players in the Boston farm [...]

Danny Valencia, Jose Iglesias, Felix Doubront on Tap as Red Sox Turn to Youth to Stave Off Orioles

The Orioles knew they would have a pretty good chance Saturday if they could force their matinee against the Red Sox into extra innings. Boston hasn't been so great past the ninth inning this year, while the O's have now won 16 in a row in extras. The Orioles have built their playoff-hopeful season on pulling out close wins and getting production from their call-ups. On Sunday...

Red Sox 2, Orioles 1

Cody Ross doubled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, Andrew Bailey escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth and the Boston Red Sox ended Baltimore's six-game winning streak, beating the Orioles 2-1 Sunday. The Orioles began the day one game behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East and two games ahead of Oakland for the top wild-card spot in the league. Boston...

Orioles miss chance to tie for first by losing to Red Sox

BOSTON - Almost any contending team would take a 6-3 September road trip that starts on the West Coast and ends in Boston. But the Orioles lamented that a chance to go 7-2 and go back into a tie for first place slipped through their fingers at Fenway Park Sunday. The 2-1 loss to the out-of-the-money Red Sox cost the Birds a chance to catch the Yankees for the American League East...
