The Boston Red Sox suspended closer Alfredo Aceves for three games, the team announced Saturday night.

Aceves, who was sidelined for "conduct detrimental to the team," was suspended after a closed-door meeting Friday with manager Bobby Valentine. That was preceded by Aceves showing anger that he was not used to close Friday's victory over Kansas City.

"I'm a little disappointed. You've just got to know the difference between right and wrong. That's all we ask,” Valentine told the Boston Globe.

The right-hander became the closer in April after Andrew Bailey, who was acquired to be the team's closer during the off-season, underwent thumb surgery late in spring training and was not activated until this month.

Aceves, who is in his second season with the Red Sox, has 27 saves this season. He has struggled in the role recently, allowing 11 runs on 13 hits in his last 9 2/3 innings.

Bailey closed Friday's game after Aceves suffered his seventh blown save Thursday, allowing five runs on six hits. Aceves said the loss was his defense's fault after facing 10 batters and throwing 37 pitches.

"I missed a couple of pitches, yeah," Aceves told the Globe. "It's not about that (why) we lost the game. There were like 25 runs."
