The Red Sox will be represented for Jake Peavy's scheduled start on Thursday in Chicago against the Tigers. A baseball source told MassLive.com that the Red Sox wanted to see the White Sox right-hander pitch again after coming off the disabled list. Peavy made his first start since June 4 on Sunday tossing six innings against the Braves. He allowed four runs two earned. Peavy was out with a rib fracture. Another baseball source believes interest in Peavy will be heavy: any contending team should want a look. The White Sox will listen to offers for anyone the source said for the right offer. It's hard to understand however what their motivation to part with Addison Reed or Chris Sale would be. Once Chicago reliever Jesse Crain is healthy the Red Sox will want to see him pitch as well according to sources. Crain could be back this weekend and no longer needs to go out on a minor-league rehab assignment as reported by The Chicago Tribune. The Tribune reported the Red Sox Braves Dodgers Reds and Diamondbacks were expected to be at Chicago's U.S. Cellular Field this weekend. The White Sox and Red Sox have showed a productive relationship the last two years. Before the Thornton deal this season there was the Kevin Youkilis trade a year ago. Peavy's former teammate Red Sox reliever Matt Thornton called Peavy "one of the best competitors in the game." "He goes out there every five days he's going to leave it all out there" Thornton said. "Gives you everything he's got." Peavy who's still just 32 despite this being his 12th major-league season makes $14.5 million this year and next and has a conditional $15 million player option for 2015. Peavy has a 4.12 ERA in 12 starts this season with 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings his highest rate since 2009. His walk rate 1.8 batters per nine is in line with the last two years: 2.0 in 2012 and 1.9 the year before.
