Zack Cozart hit a tiebreaking homer on Jonathan Papelbon's first pitch in the ninth and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Phillies 5-4 Tuesday night to snap a seven-game losing streak against Philadelphia. Kevin Frandsen hit a tying RBI triple off Jonathan Broxton in the eighth, but the NL Central-leading Reds went up to stay on Cozart's shot off Papelbon (3-5). Cliff Lee took a shutout into the seventh before allowing three runs to remain winless at home this season. The Reds took a 4-3 lead when Todd Frazier connected off Antonio Bastardo with two outs in the eighth for his 18th homer. The Phillies answered against Broxton (2-1). Domonic Brown hit a two-out single, and Frandsen tripled down the right-field line. Reds starter Homer Bailey gave up three runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings. Aroldis Chapman finished for his 30th save in 34 tries. He struck out Chase Utley swinging at 102 mph fastball with the tying run at third to end it. The five-time defending NL East champ...

Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Lockdown credentials

Jonathan Papelbon dropped to a 90% close ratio last night for the Philadelphia Phillies from 93.1%.  Will he be able to reach 93% again, which he achieved in 2011? TAL’S HANDY CAPS WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: I will publish after every game that is not washed out.  I will have many summer-long highlights of puzzle pieces, especially important after drubbings and defeats. If you were...

Stars aligning just right for the Reds

Even if the regular season ended today, the 2012 campaign has already been a special one for the Cincinnati Reds. They have electrified their fan base with a plethora of come-from-behind wins, walk-offs, defensive gems, fantastic pitching and all-around winning play on the diamond. They own the longest winning streak in baseball this year when they ripped off a string of 10 in...

Reds hold on for win over Philly, 3-2

A sure way to tell this is a special season – not even the Philadelphia curse can keep the Reds at bay. The Redlegs found a way to win in the City of Brotherly Love once again Wednesday night, holding on for a 3-2 victory. Bronson Arroyo (10-7) was awesome on the hill, the Reds had just enough timely hitting and Aroldis Chapman held on in the ninth ...

Phillippe Aumont called up, will he relieve Cliff Lee?

Phillippe Aumont, one of the prospects received in the 2009 trade of Cliff Lee to the Seattle Mariners, has been called up by the Philadelphia Phillies to replace Jeremy Horst. Horst has been placed on the paternity leave list. As irony would have it, Aumont will be activated for tonight' game, which will be started by Lee. I am not sure how many times this has happened in the...

Reds turn to Cueto for series win in Philly

The league leader in some major pitching categories while playing for a division front-runner, Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto is an obvious candidate for the NL Cy Young Award. Philadelphia's Cole Hamels may be a long shot for that honor, but defeating the Reds could help bolster his resume. Cueto aims to become baseball's first 17-game winner and lead Cincinnati to a rare...

Cozart's HR off Papelbon help Reds in win

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Zack Cozart went up swinging when Jonathan Papelbon figured he'd be looking. Cozart won. Cozart hit a tiebreaking homer on Papelbon's first pitch in the ninth and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Phillies 5-4 Tuesday night to snap a seven-game losing streak against Philadelphia. "I was looking to swing at the first pitch," Cozart said. "...

Lee hopes for his third win of the season in tonight's game against the Reds.

Last night the Phillies showed us the team we’ve been missing in an exciting win against the Reds. Doc definitely didn’t have his best performance, but he was still dominant against Cincinnati's pitcher Mike Leake. The Fightin’s started off slow, as the Reds took an early 2-0 lead in the first, but they quickly changed pace and got on the board later that inning with...

Mesoraco suspension reduced to two games

Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco had his suspension reduced from three games to two, and he will serve the suspension Tuesday and Wednesday, the team announced Tuesday. Mesoraco was suspended for making contact with home-plate umpire Chad Fairchild during a July 30 argument. He then appealed the suspension and continued playing until the league ruled on his appeal. The Reds have...

Game 123: Reds 5, Phillies 12

Well, there’s good news and there’s bad news about last night’s game. First, the good news: The Reds didn’t commit any errors. The Reds … [visit site to read more]

Reds can reverse losing trend vs. Phillies

Mike Leake wasn't too sharp the last time the Cincinnati Reds faced the Philadelphia Phillies, and the result was a historic defeat. But if Leake has the same stuff as he did in his last start, the result could be a lot different this time. The NL Central-leading Reds will try to end a six-game losing streak to the Phillies on Monday night in Philadelphia as these teams square...

Game 124: Reds 5, Phillies 4

The Reds hung in there in a tight game with the Phillies to finally win by one run. It was an exciting game (though, admittedly, much of the “excitement” was contributed by the Reds’ bullpen) and especially fun to watch since the Reds came out on top.

Central-leading Reds come to Philly for four-game series

Off a 3-for-4 game in the series finale against the Brewers, Domonic Brown and the Phillies face the Cincinnati Reds in a four-game series. (Philliedelphia/Kevin Durso) As the season winds down, it's easier to separate the men from the boys and contenders from pretenders. The Reds fit both of the former descriptions. Cincinnati has been a revived team after missing the playoffs...

Homer Happy Phils Crush Cincinnati, 12-5

Doc didn't have his best stuff tonight, but the stuff he had was still dominant. The Reds jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first. Jay Bruce doubled to bring home Zack Cozart, the first run, then Brandon Phillips scored on a groundout from former Phillie Scott Rolen. The Phils got on the board in the home half of the first courtesy of Ryan Howard's RBI single which...

Phils lose close one as Reds pull out 3-2 win

A total of 41,794 fans, the moving ice cream containers, the Phantic, and oh, yeah, losing Phillies baseball. My live trek with the Phillies started in Pittsburgh on April 5 , a 1-0 win on opening day. I had to get to the park, I have Wednesday and Thursday off, so I decided to go to Wednesday matchup against the Reds, pitting Vance Worley vs. Bronson Arroyo at Citizens Bank Park...
