Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker is big on the running game.

"Speed kills," he said.

However, the Reds are next to last in the National League with 15 stolen bases. They did not attempt a steal Monday in a 3-1 win over the Atlanta Braves.

"I always like to run," Baker said, "but you can't run into outs. Part of it is we don't have a bunch of base-stealers, and part of it is it's about percentage of being safe rather than the number. Early in the season, we weren't hardly hitting. If you don't get on base, how you going to run? There are a number of reasons."

The Reds have been successful on 15 of their 19 attempts.

Drew Stubbs leads the Reds with six steals in seven attempts. He had 13 steals at this points last year on his way to 40.

Stubbs is sometimes asked not to run because he's hitting in front of Joey Votto. Stubbs also has had limited opportunities due to a .284 on-base percentage.

"I'm not getting on base at the clip I want," Stubbs said. "I think stolen bases also come in clusters. I haven't really reeled off a streak."
