Cincinnati Reds closer Ryan Madson was scratched for a scheduled appearance Thursday.Madson had yet to appear in a game during spring training due to soreness in his pitching elbow. He appeared to be on the mend after facing four batters in a simulated game on Tuesday.“We’re sorting it out,” Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. “We’ll let you know.”The Reds signed Madson to a one-year contract in January. The righthander was terrific for the Philadelphia Phillies last year, converting 32 of 34 save opportunities.Madson became expendable when the Phillies signed Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon to a four-year contract.

The hits just keep on coming. Per Ken Rosenthal, Ryan Madson is the latest pitcher to need Tommy John surgery, and will be lost for the 2012 season. The falling dominos will push Sean Marshall into the closer’s role with the Reds, and Aroldis Chapman will move back to the bullpen to replace Marshall in the vacated lefty setup role.
