Found April 24, 2012 on Redlegs Review:

The Reds (8-9) and Giants (9-8) faced off in the first of a three game series, and first of a nine game home stand. And it was a great evening for the Redlegs. Mat Latos pitched 7 innings of shut out baseball to lead the Reds to a 9-2 win over the Giants, and Latos' first win in a Reds uniform. The Reds lit up the scoreboard early, forcing Cain to throw 38 pitches and giving up two runs off of a 2 out homer by Brandon Phillips. The Good - Mat Latos came alive. Pitching 7 complete shutout innings, giving up only 4 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts, lowing his ear to 5.64 on the year. - The whole staff got on the hit train, with the exception of Joey Votto. - The Reds only left two runners in scoring position,  getting 9 runs on 11 hits. The Bad - There wasn't much bad in this game, although in a surprise, of all Reds position players, only Joey Votto didn't get a hit. Joey seemed too eager to swing out of his shoes in all of his AB's today. The Nota...

Mat Latos: Velocity, Repertoire, and Command

In 2011, Mat Latos emerged from April with an 0-4 record and an earned run average near five. Even though he’s wearing a different uniform, things must be feeling eerily familiar right now. After three starts, Latos finds himself winless with his new team and currently possesses an unseemly 8.22 ERA and 1.89 WHIP. Yes, the ERA predictors suggest Latos hasn’t been quite this bad...

Mat Latos Has Douche-y Arm Tats

I Hate ML. This is how I would sign baseballs if anyone cared about blogging like they do actual baseball. Mat Latos came into his start against the Giants with an ERA between 7 and 70, and left with a win. He would do that. And while this game was painful, it’s awful nice to know we won’t have to see his ugly mug much the rest of this season. If the Giants were going to lose...

Game 17, 2012: This is the Mat Latos We Were Searching For

[Box Score] [Cincinnati.com] [Bay City Ball] [Mercury News] [The Splash] Now this is the Mat Latos we traded for. If the Reds get this Latos to show up more often than not this season, it’s pretty self-explanatory what’s going to happen. The Reds can be a monster. I didn’t think the Reds had a chance in Hell last night when I saw Matt Cain was pitching. #bbpBox_194804991859499009...

How hitting Votto was a team-building event

In last night’s titanic struggle between the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants, a hapless Dan Otero in relief for the Giants missed his release point and hit Joey Votto smack in the thigh. No big deal; he wasn’t trying to do it. He was probably just so desperate to miss the Votto wheelhouse that he went a little overboard. But the interactions that followed that event...

Breaking down Votto's contract incentives

The Reds sent shockwaves throughout the baseball community when they extended Joey Votto's contract for an extra ten years, $225MM earlier this month -- keeping the All Star slugger in the Queen City through the conclusion of the 2023 season. You may have already caught a glimpse of how his yearly salary breaks down per year, but what you may not have have seen are the...

Latos gets 1st win, Reds beat Giants

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Mat Latos finally got his first win for Cincinnati, pitching seven shutout innings against an old NL West nemesis, and Brandon Phillips homered and drove in three runs Tuesday night, leading the Reds to a 9-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Latos (1-2) came to the Reds in a four-player deal with San Diego and acknowledged trying too hard to impress his...

That’s The Reds We Remembered

How about that Reds fans? Mat Latos in his 2nd start in GABP shuts down the San Francisco Giants as the Reds rout their NL West foes 9-2 at Bark in the Park Night in Cincinnati! After getting roughed up in his first two outings, Latos showed Reds fans tonight why the front office traded their best prospects for him. Latos went 7 innings, giving up just 4 hits, 2 walks and 3 strike...

Series preview: Reds welcome Giants

The Reds, fresh off an off day Monday, welcome San Francisco to town for a three game set at GABP on Tuesday. While the Reds should be fresh, the Giants are coming off a doubleheader sweep over the Mets on Monday. The wins moved SF to 9-7 on the year, three games behind the Dodgers in the West. All the info goodness after the break.... San Francisco...

Chen, Latos earn the nod

Start 'Em Bruce Chen (TOR, @MIN) A baseball vagabond playing for his 10th franchise, Chen has been one of the few bright spots for 3-12 Kansas City. Through 18 innings on the young season, the de facto ace of the Royals rotation has 14 strikeouts, a 2.00 ERA and 0.83 WHIP. Toronto employs one of the premier lineups on the Junior Circuit, but the Twins shouldn't alarm...

Notable quotes from Sunday

The Reds escaped the Windy City with a 4-3 victory on Sunday -- winning the series and finishing the 10-game road trip with a modest mark of 4-6. While that may not be too impressive, it's not bad considering the fact that they lost five of the first six. Hopefully winning three of the last four will give them some momentum heading into the 9-game homestand. Here are some...
