CINCINNATI His motto should be, Xavier Paul, always on call. For the past few months, Paul has been Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Bakers Main Man off the bench when situations call for a left handed pinch-hitter.And X has marked his spot. So far this season he is hitting .300 in his pinch-hitting duties that includes a grand slam home run.The 28-year-old outfielder from Slidell, La., was released last July by the Washington Nationals and was unemployed for nine days before the Reds signed him to a minor-league contract on July 12.Six days later he was plucked from the Class AAA Louisville roster and spent the rest of the season doing benchmark bench work .314 in 86 at-bats that including 12 hits in 36 pinch-hitting assignments (.333).Those who have been every day players and end up as pinch-hitters say that coming off the bench cold to pinch-hit is like sitting in a freezer for a couple of hours then rush to a table to do a crossword puzzle. In his last two appearances, Paul has singled both times, once to successfully launch an extra-inning victory and the other in trying to launch an extra-inning victory that was not successful. But he did his part. Its tough, thats for sure, said Paul. But one thing Ive learned is to never let myself get too high or too low. You are going to have your streaks where it is not going so good and you have your streaks where they cant get you out. It is learning to take the game day-to-day.That, of course, is how great relief pitchers operate. They have short memory spans. They forget the day before, whether they strike out the side or give up a game-losing three-run home run.Thats it, exactly, said Paul. Sometimes they get their stuff lit up and sometimes they have a 10-inning scoreless streak. Ive just learn to accept failure and learned how to handle success. There is a rare window of opportunity for Paul right now. Regular left fielder Ryan Ludwick wont return to the lineup until mid-July (shoulder surgery) and his stand-in, Chris Heisey, is struggling, bumping along at .183.Baker hints that Paul may be allotted more time in the starting lineup, Because we need some production out there (in left field). Were leaving so many men on base in key situations. We wish we had Ludwick, but we dont. So we need some production. So Paul might get the call. He was in left field for Wednesday afternoon against the Chicago Cubs.Paul has been doing his job off the bench and it always amazes me that people seemed shocked when he does his mob, said Baker. He did the same thing last year. Ive known about him for a long time. When X-man was with the Dodgers (2009-11), Gene Clines was the hitting coach and he told me all about Paul. He said, He can hit.I always try to match him up against guys who throw hard, said Baker, knowing that sneaking a fastball past Paul is like trying to house fly past a hungry frog.Defense has been an issue during Pauls career and Baker said he sees Paul doing something about it with extra detail during batting practice.Im taking fly balls in batting practice, shagging real hard, he said. Im taking them in all three positions and practicing my throws from all three positions. I have to stay familiar with all three because I never know where Ill end up.As for a preference, Paul said he has played all three, but mostly left field and right field, I have no preference. Ive bounced around all three in my career. Im not an every day guy and have to play all three so Ive learned to like em all, I guess.Anybody who believes that extra players sit on the bench chewing sunflower seeds and sipping Gatorade until the manager calls his name doesnt understand the job description. Here is Pauls regimen on days he is not in the lineup:They have an indoor 60-yard track behind the dugout, he said You can get your sprints in to get loose. I also go into the weight room. I hit off the machine. I keep myself moving around. In between every inning I try to do a little bit of something, just so Im loose if Dusty calls me name at any time it wont be a big shock to my body.Paul, though, still envisions the time when he gets to play all nine innings a few times, see what he can do with more than one at-bat every two or three games. As a player, you want to be in the lineup every day, he said. But we have a great group of players, a great bunch of guys. Losing Luddy (Ludwick) was huge. Once Heisey heats up, him and myself will do a good job of filling in while Luddy is out.Paul, who has only two years of major-league service on his resume of 10 years in pro ball, pause for effect, broke into a broad grin and said, Yeah, of course, I wouldnt mind playing more. If that happens, it happens. If it doesnt, it doesnt.Thats the mantra of the extra player.

Reds pitchers cost pizza place $100K

A promotion by a Cincinnati pizza chain where it gives out free pizza to ticket holders who attend a game where Reds pitchers record 11 strikeouts is costing big bucks.

Looking at the first two starts of Tony Cingrani for the Reds

Tony Cingrani now has two starts under his belt in the Major Leagues and the results have been quite strong: 12 innings, 2.25 ERA, 10 hits, 3 walks and 17 strikeouts. That is flat out getting things done. The two starts have both been good, but they have been quite different from each other. In his first start he lasted just 5 innings as he struggled with his control at times, while...

On a strikeout tear, Cincinnati Reds pitchers have cost pizza chain $100,000

Taking a big bite out of its profit margin but making a big splash for its brand awareness, Cincinnati’s local restaurant chain LaRosa’s Pizzeria reportedly has had to fork over approximately $100,000 in free pizzas in conjunction with its promotion where it gives out tasty pies whenever Reds pitchers record 11 strikeouts in a game. The deal is this: Any fan bearing a ticket...

Cincinnati pizzeria, LaRosa’s, has given $100K in free pizza for Reds promotion

via Through Tuesday, the Cincinnati Reds’ pitching staff had struck out 182 opposing batters in 189 innings pitched.  They top the National League and rank second in the Majors in total K’s for a staff.  And while this is terrible news for National League hitters, it’s outstanding news for Reds fans in the Cincinnati area, especially the fat ones. You see, a Cincinnati...

Injuries, the Reds, and the unluckiest team in the NL Central

Ryan Ludwick attempting to drive in a run in his healthier days. With the minor injuries to Zack Cozart and Jonathan Broxton recently, I started thinking about how injury prone the Cincinnati Reds have seemed so far during the 2013 season. So I loaded up a list of all the injured players across Major League Baseball to compare the Reds to their National League Central opponents. The...

Reds' Broxton OK after taking liner off hand

Reds reliever Jonathan Broxton had no problems with his pitching hand on Tuesday, a day after a line drive knocked him out of a game. Broxton was hit on the right hand by Nate Schierholtz's line drive in the eighth inning of a 5-4, 13-inning win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night. He left the game for X-rays that were negative. Broxton said Tuesday the ball hit him by the...

Latos, Frazier deliver 1-0 win to take series

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Mat Latos retired the first 10 batters and 15 of the first 16 he faced and Todd Frazier hit a long home run to help the Reds complete a wacky, impressive, 10-game homestand with 1-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. With one out in the sixth inning of a scoreless tie, Frazier blasted a 2-1 pitch 480 feet to straightaway center field to increase his team-leading...

Game 22: Cubs 0, Reds 1

The Reds took the game and the series from the Cubs yesterday, but just barely. Mat Latos was great and finally got a win for his efforts. He put in 7.0+ innings and allowed 0 runs on 4 hits and a walk. One of those hits and the walk were to the first two guys he faced in the eighth, though, so it was a good time to bring in Jonathan Broxton for three quick outs. Aroldis Chapman...

Get yer Red-hot pizza, while you can

The Cincinnati Reds have been striking out batters at a breakneck pace, and all those Ks are costing one local restaurant chain, which has handed out more than $100K in free pizza this month as a result of the team's penchant for punchouts. LaRosa's Pizzeria has been a Queen City staple for more than 50 years, with 65 stores in and around Cincinnati, and for the second consecutive...

Reds rally in 9th, but fall 4-2 in 10 innings

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Carlos Marmol blew a lead in the ninth before Darwin Barney bailed him out with a homer in the 10th inning on Tuesday night, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Chicago ended its four-game losing streak after blowing a late lead for the second straight day. The Cubs let a two-run lead get away in the 13th inning of a 5-4 loss Monday...

The Bryce Harper Monster Bomb off Bunny Arroyo that wrecked by gambling account

May 7th, 2009: I tried to be sneaky tonight by taking a prop bet that Bryce Harper would NOT homer off Bronson Arroyo. You figure that Arroyo is a veteran pitcher who should know better than to pitch to the one hitter in the Nationals cold lineup who can hurt you. What resulted was one of the longest home runs that Bryce Harper has ever hit. After the ball landed on the centerfield...

Nats Will Try To Jumpstart Offense Against Reds

After being swept in the previous series to the St. Louis Cardinals, the Washington Nationals (10-11) will continue their home stand by facing another tough NL Central opponent, the Cincinnati Reds (13-9). Being swept by the Cardinals dropped the Nationals’ record below .500 for the first time since 2011, when they finished the season 80-81. In order to bring their record up...
