John Fay wrote today that it will take about 16 million dollars for the Reds and Walt Jocketty to re-sign all their arbitration eligible players.
They took one step toward filling out the rest of the team with the resigning of Ramon Hernandez. The front office felt that it was important for the pitching staff and catchers to maintain their continuity. Hernandez was productive with the bat last year, and he speaks spanish which is a benefit with the Reds many latin pitchers.
“We wanted to provide our young pitching staff with some continuity. We felt all of our pitchers were comfortable pitching to Ramon,” Jocketty said. “We also like his production at the plate. Our catchers were very solid last year offensively.”
The Reds catching staff combined for 91 RBI’s and Hernandez was a big part of that along with Ryan Hanigan.
The re-signing means that catching prospect Devin Mesoraco will probably start the season in AAA Louisville as opposed to the major league roster.
