The Reds’ interest in Cuban infielder Alexander Guerrero – even though Walt Jocketty says they’re unlikely to sign Guerrero – is the strongest indication that the club will try to trade Brandon Phillips. Guerrero projects as a second baseman. He reportedly agreed to a seven-year $32 million deal with the Dodgers in July but the contract was nixed because he had not been cleared by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control. He’s since been cleared. He’s likely to get that kind of money. Scouts say Guerrero who played shortstop in Cuba projects as a second baseman. The Reds aren’t going to pay $4.5 million a year for a backup. It could be that the Reds were looking at Guerrero as a shortstop and backed off when their scouts decided he could not play there. But it’s more likely that they saw him as a replacement for Phillips. Phillips ticked off a lot of people in the organization with his behavior this year. Bob Castellini was the driving force behind Phillips signing. Phillips b...

Report: Reds plan to trade Brandon Phillips this winter

The Cincinnati Reds bowed out of the 2013 playoffs in the one-game wild card round in disappointing fashion. After firing manager Dusty Baker, the Reds are apparently not done remaking their organization. Word has now come that they plan on trading second baseman Brandon Phillips this winter as well. Phillips posted an OPS of just .706 (his worst as a Red) in 2013, but did hit 18...

Report: Reds willing to listen to trade offers for Brandon Phillips this offseason

With the MLB postseason in full swing, there isn't much to report out of Reds camp. The managerial search seems to be moving in a snail-like pace, and most of the sports talk in Cincinnati has been revolving around the Bengals. But there has been at least one interesting development this week. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Reds are likely out of the fold in acquiring...

The Reds Intend to Trade Brandon Phillips This Off-Season

Brandon Phillips has been a Pirates killer, but might be moved by the Reds this off-season. (Photo Credit: David Hague) The rivalry between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds saw a boost this season. A big reason for this was that the Pirates were competitive, and were competing with the Reds for the Wild Card spot. They swept Cincinnati in the final weekend of the series...

Jose Arredondo has elected free agency

According to Matt Eddy of Baseball America, right-handed reliever Jose Arredondo has elected free agency under Article XX(D). After posting stellar numbers with the Reds in 2012 (6-2, 2.95 ERA, 66 GP), Arredondo struggled mightily this season in spring training, and found himself as the odd man out in the bullpen come Opening Day. As fate would have it, the 28-year-old would...

The Braves would have interest in Brandon Phillips if the Reds take Dan Uggla back

We heard yesterday that the Reds could look to trade second baseman Brandon Phillips this offseason. And it sounds like we can count the Braves among the teams who could be in the mix to acquire him though there is a catch involved. We’re talking about a hypothetical scenario here so there’s nothing to suggest that the Reds would be interested in such a deal. Still it’s interesting...
