The Cincinnati Reds have reached an agreement with right-hander Andrew Brackman on a one-year deal. Brackman was a September call up of the New York Yankees last season and pitched in three games. But the team declined his contract option this winter. Brackman was selected in the first round of the 2007 draft by the Yankees despite needing reconstructive elbow surgery. The Cincinnati native has gone 15-29 with a 5.11 ERA in 89 total appearances (58 starts) in the minors.

Thursday news and notes

The Reds made a few signings  over the last few weeks. Andrew Brackman is officially a Red now. The Reds also signed PJ Phillips, he is Brandon’s younger brother. He is a former 2nd round draft pick of the Angels (2005), so he at least had tools at one point. He has severe plate discipline issues though that have held him back from using those tools on the offensive side of...

Bowden: Jocketty Helped Reds Win Now

Love him or hate him, former-Reds GM and current ESPN writer Jim Bowden cranks out more content for discussion than anyone else on the MLB media circuit nowadays. His latest piece involves a list of five general managers who made moves this off-season to help their team win now. Among the five on that dubious list is none other than Cincinnati GM Walt Jocketty. Here is the excerpt...

Former Yanks top pick Brackman signs with Reds

CINCINNATI (AP) -- The Cincinnati Reds signed right-hander Andrew Brackman to a one-year deal on Wednesday, uniting him with his hometown team.

Pete Rose on Joey Votto being a Red beyond 2014

While perusing the different Reds sites around the net, I recently found Pete Rose’s opinion on Joey Votto’s future with the Reds over at Reds Country. “I’ve got to believe (Reds owner) Bob Castellini wants to keep him, because nobody wants to win more than Bob,” Rose said. “(After all the recent movement by big-name first baseman), it’s not such a great time...

Odd Stats from the 2011 Season

Some people claim that statistics can tell you anything you want to know, and some people claim they can tell you very little. Whatever the verdict may be, statistics are still interesting for the mind to try and absorb. But as much as I tried to comprehend some of the following head-scratching stats from last year, I just couldn't fully bring myself to do it. Isn't baseball...

Leftfield Free Agent Options

The Reds currently only have four opening day outfield options on the current 40-man roster: Jay Bruce, Drew Stubbs, Chris Heisey, and Todd Frazier. John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reported earlier this week that The Reds pursuit of an outfielder won’t begin in earnest until the situation with closer Francisco Cordero is resolved…Jocketty acknowledged interest in free...

Reds hoping to stay healthy at hot corner

If Juan Francisco stays healthy for the Reds, he should again by a viable alternative at third base to 37-year-old Scott Rolen and his problematic left shoulder.

Spring is in the air

In case you were wondering, pitchers and catchers report in 45 days. On that optimistic springtime note, THT Forecasts (where I’ll be writing the Reds player capsules this year, by the way) currently projects the Reds to win 93 games and finish one up on the Cards. It’s January and, for the moment, I choose not to question that. I can’t wait for baseball to come back.

Dishing with Dusty

MLB.com youth correspondent Meggie Zahneis recently caught up with Dusty Baker, and she asked the Reds manager the same questions many fans have on their minds.

Reds name Jenkins assistant pitching coach

Now part of manager Dusty Baker's coaching staff, Mack Jenkins will work under pitching coach Bryan Price as the Reds' assistant pitching coach.
