Grab your sunglasses and sunscreen, folks.
For their final tuneup before Opening Day, the Reds have agreed to travel to Pensacola on March 28 to play an exhibition game against the Blue Wahoos, their Double-A affiliate.
“We don’t do this very often, playing in our minor league ballparks,” said Bill Bavasi, the Reds vice president, who attended a news conference Wednesday at the Blue Wahoos stadium. Several hundred fans attended to hear the announcement.
The game was originally scheduled for March 27. However, a revised spring training schedule thwarted that idea as the Reds are slated to play that day in Arizona.
So, the Reds will take a charter flight from Phoenix to Pensacola and arrive late on the evening of March 27. They will play the game March 28 and then hop on a plane and leave for Cincinnati immediately afterward.
Blue Wahoos president Bruce Baldwin said the cost to bring the Reds to Pensacola is estimated to be between $90,000 to $100,000.
