Mark Sheldon provides an update today on Reds reliever Jose Arredondo.
If you recall, around this time last year, the Reds signed the injured reliever to a major league deal in the hopes that he would be healthy and available to pitch in 2011. In Arredondo’s only healthy major league season (2008), he posted a 1.62 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and .190 opponent AVG in 61 relief innings. Arredondo started his professional career as a starter, but after transitioning to the bullpen, he has a 2.41 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 72 strikeouts in 71 AA & AAA relief innings.
Arredondo had his Tommy John surgery last Feb. 2 and spent the entire season rehabilitating.
“He’s a talented guy, one of those young guys with a lot of skills,” Bavasi said. “The surgery, off-time and rehab really opened his eyes to what the game is all about. What little I saw in the instructional league — he’s coming along like Edinson Volquez.”
