According to a report by Kevin Baxter of the L.A. Times, the Los Angeles Angels plan to interview former Mets GM Omar Minaya for their vacant general manager position. Baxter writes:

Add Omar Minaya’s name to the growing list of candidates who will interview for the Angels’ vacant general manager post.

Minaya, the former GM of the Montreal Expos, held the same post with the New York Mets from 2005 to 2010. The Dominican-born Minaya was baseball’s first Latino general manager, and Angels owner Arte Moreno was baseball’s first Latino owner.”

Wow, I never thought Minaya would seriously be considered for a front office position with another team after his tenure with New York. During his time with the Mets Omar’s moves were often reactionary and never without question. Some of his more notable transactions included handing out long term contracts to Pedro Martinez, Carlos Beltran, Johan Santana (after acquiring the pitcher from Minnesota), and Jason Bay. Then of course there were the Luis Castillo and Oliver Perez deals, which I had a hard time even writing but felt it was necessary to mention.

People will differ in their opinion of each deal but for all the criticism of Omar Minaya (and there’s plenty to go around), he succeeded in getting some of the biggest stars in baseball to come play for his team. Did he overpay? Sure. Were the terms of his deals too long? Almost always. But believe it or not even that sometimes isn’t enough for a GM to get a player he wants. After losing out on some of the bigger name free agents in recent offseasons (ala Carl Crawford), maybe that’s what the Angels ownership is drawn to. Baxter mentions that “an Angels spokesman would neither confirm nor deny the team’s interest in Minaya” and goes on to list others who are being considered for the position.

Since former General Manager Tony Reagins resigned at the end of last month, the Angels have reportedly talked with Rick Hahn, the Chicago White Sox’s vice president and assistant GM; Kim Ng, former Dodgers assistant GM; Jerry DiPoto, a senior vice president with the Arizona Diamondbacks; and Yankees executives Billy Eppler and Damon Oppenheimer.

To read more about Minaya’s tumultuous time in Queens, I highly recommend checking out the article by Steve Schreiber of Amazin’ Avenue called “The Omar Minaya Chronicles: A History in Dates and Pictures.”
