An Associated Press report released Thursday night suggests that Major League Baseball will hand down suspensions in the Biogenesis case by Monday so that some players involved will have a chance to return for the postseason. While some could be announced as early as Friday, the MLB office has apparently set Monday as the deadline for players to cut deals with the league. Alex Rodriguez is obviously the biggest name in a group of 14 players who can still come to an agreement with baseball officials, and he is expected to face a much harsher penalty than the others involved. It is assumed that most players connected to the Biogenesis anti-aging clinic will be banned for 50 games. Baseball is currently threatening to ban Rodriguez from the game for life if he doesn’t agree to a long suspension, possibly in the neighborhood of 200 games. The New York Yankees expect their third baseman to be accused to recruiting other players to Biogenesis and also attempting to purchase and destroy evidence in the case. A-Rod has vowed to appeal any punishment he is given but reports suggest the evidence against him is incredibly strong. For a guy like Texas Rangers All-Star outfielder Nelson Cruz, it would behoove him to accept his suspension immediately. The Rangers are in the thick of a playoff race and will have exactly 50 games remaining on Monday. That means Cruz would be back in time for the postseason if Texas can nab a playoff spot. Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta is another All-Star on a playoff contender and his team will have 53 games left on Monday. Again, it is probably in his and the Tigers’ best interest accept a suspension and be ready to come back for the playoffs. San Diego Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera, also an All-Star, could wind up serving all of his (likely) 50-game suspension this season if he starts it before Tuesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. That would mean he can come back fresh on Opening Day next season. It looks like we might get some finality in the Biogensis case after this weekend. And that would be the best thing for several of the players and teams involved.
