In a season in which so much went wrong for the Red Sox, Cody Ross emerged as one of the team's bright spots. The Sox now have the task of securing the outfielder to a new deal, but things are looking promising. Contract talks between the Red Sox and Ross, who is slated to become a free agent, have gained "some momentum," according to WEEI.com. Ross hit .267 with 22 home runs and 81 RBIs in 130 games in his first season in Boston, and he was among the club's most vocal players, win or lose. The 31-year-old's production, coupled with his hard-nosed style of play, made him an instant fan favorite among Red Sox fans, and it was apparently enough for the team to consider inking him to a new contract. Ross signed a one-year, $3 million deal prior to the 2012 season. Ross was particularly successful in the friendly confines of Fenway Park, hitting .298 with a .356 on-base percentage, a .565 slugging percentage and a .921 OPS. The slugger noted in an ESPN.com diary in September that he wanted to return to Boston and that he was in the "beginning stages" of talks with the club. Those talks have seemingly ramped up now that the Red Sox' season has come to a close, and he and David Ortiz -- also a free agent -- remain big priorities for a team with an interesting offseason on tap.
