Chicago-cubs-starting
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher, Jeff Samardzija will make his final start of 2012 today against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cubs manager Dale Sveum made the announcement subsequent to Friday’s game. According to ESPN Chicago, the decision to shut Samardzija down is a precautionary effort due in part because of the work he put in during the winter and spring months. Samardzija (8-13) has actually put together a solid season. In 165.2 innings pitched, Samardzija possesses a 3.91 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 171 strikeouts. Keep an eye on Samardzija next spring. The Cubs don’t expect him to have an innings cap in 2013, making him a viable fantasy option for your team next season.

Alfonso Soriano is overpaid

The other day The Hardball Times wrote that Alfonso Soriano is not overpaid. I'm a big fan of anyone who doesn't talk about Soriano in a way that makes him seem like he's a lazy, overpaid player. However, THT relied on fWAR, which uses UZR as its defensive metric. His 2007 UZR is so high that my iPad probably won't let me type it out. It's ridiculous to think...

Cubs' Clevenger suspended one game

Chicago Cubs catcher Steve Clevenger has been suspended for one game by Major League Baseball for his role in a benches-clearing incident against the Nationals. Clevenger, who also was fined, did not appeal the penalty and was set to sit out Saturday night at Pittsburgh. During the sixth inning of the Cubs' 9-2 loss to Washington on Thursday night, a pitch from Chicago'...

Other ‘Unwritten Rules’ the Cubs Believe

As you’re aware, there was little dust-up between the Nats and Cubs on Thursday night after Chicago tried to bean Bryce Harper. Back-up catcher Steve Clevenger explained why after the game: “You’re up 7-2 … you don’t swing 3-0 in that situation.” Mind you, this occurred in the FIFTH INNING. Clevenger’s ridiculously stupid notion got us thinking about what other “unwritten...

Hardball Times: Soriano is not overpaid

This study leans a little more heavily on defensive metrics (and one in particular) than I'd like, though at least we have many seasons of data. It's otherwise a great look at the constantly maligned Alfonso Soriano. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/alfonso-soriano-is-not-overpaid/

Exploring the Arsenal – Chris Rusin

Exploring the Arsenal will run prior to each game, providing you with a brief scouting report on the starting pitcher expected to oppose the Pirates. The chart below shows the horizontal and vertical movement of every pitch thrown by that particular pitcher in 2012. This chart is from the catcher’s point of view. Cubs Nationals on Field Melee (video)

The Chicago Cubs seemingly took out most of their losing frustration on the first place Nationals last night because Jayson Werth supposedly broke an unwritten rule by swinging at 3-0 count with the bases loaded in the 5th inning with his team leading 7-2. The very next batter was Bryce Harper who was on the wrong side of Cubs reliever Lendy Castillo throwing inside at him. Here...

Cubs/Nationals have bench-clearing brawl without the brawl part (Video)

Back on Thursday night, things got heated between the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs in the 6th inning when Cubs pitcher Lendy Castillo nearly hit Nationals star Bryce Harper with a pitch. Harper who was not too pleased with the location of the ball went out to confront Castillo but before that happened, both teams cleared the benches for what would appear to be a brawl...

Daily Facepalm 9.8.2012

The Cubs beat the Pirates 12-2 for the irony alone, a day after declaring a five-run lead "piling on." But we've probably beat that dead horse enough. Play of the Day Brett "Ghost of Reed Johnson" Jackson didn't adjust his competitive settings to autopilot just because the Cubs had a ridiculous lead (die, dead horse, die more!). He went after this ball...

Benches clear twice as Nationals rout Cubs

Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson doesn't believe in the notion that a team with a big lead should ease off the gas pedal. The Chicago Cubs beg to differ. Therein lies the reason for two near brawls Thursday night in the Nationals' 9-2 rout of the Cubs, which completed a four-game sweep. First, Cubs bench coach Jamie Quirk began yelling at Nationals third base...

MLB Insiders: Chicago Cubs

The Pirates open a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs on Friday night at PNC Park. Right-hander A.J. Burnett gets the start for the Bucs. The Cubs will counter with lefty Travis Wood.

How to disgrace a hall of fame jersey

Here’s a great idea. How about I buy the jersey of a Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer (Ron Santo) and to be cooler than Stuart Scott I go ahead and change the name on the back of the jersey to “Marks”. AWESOME!!!!! That must have been the thought process of this Cubs fans who decided that it just wasn’t good enough to be walking around with an authentic Ron Santo jersey. He needed...

Samarj told tomorrow will be last start as Cubs cautious with career hi innings total. Some dude claimed off waivers today to take spot. — Gordon Wittenmyer (@GDubCub) September 7, 2012

Let's try again

Blah blah blah mometum only lasts until the next day in baseball blah blah blah. The Pirates literally (actual meaning of the word in this case) played the worst game that I can ever remember them playing yesterday. That's all there is to say about it. They should try to not do that again today, but yesterday's debacle is going to be seared into my brain for a looooong time...
