A little speculation sure can fire up the hot stove.
Kansas City Star reporter Bob Dutton wrote a story this week that suggested that Boston was ready to flip Jon Lester to the Royals in exchange for prized prospect Wil Myers, but a source with the Red Sox has now denied any negotiations for such a deal, according to Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com.
“There’s nothing going on,” the source said, according to Edes.
While the Red Sox are said to be open to virtually any trade, giving up Lester — considered the team’s ace and at least a key part of the rotation — while the team struggles to fill pitching holes did seem to be a stretch, for as good as Myers has been.

Adding some fuel to the Jon Lester trade rumor fire, Rob Bradford has a source saying that the Red Sox and Lester have not begun to discuss an extension. With just two years left on Jon Lester’s initial extension, signed back in the 2008-2009 offseason, now would typically be prime territory for extension talks. After [...]
Jon Lester‘s name has been thrust into trade discussions.
On Monday night, it was reported that the Royals were interested in acquiring Lester from the Red Sox –– in exchange for top prospect Wil Myers –– to bolster their starting rotation alongside Ervin Santana.
On the heels of the trade talks, WEEI.com is reporting that the Red Sox haven’t had any discussions with...
The Boston Red Sox have had ongoing negotiations with free
agent outfielder Nick Swisher, reports Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
The Red Sox have had ongoing negotiations with Swisher and
Boston signed free agent outfielder Jonny Gomes earlier this
offseason, but they continue to be in the market for another as they view the
veteran as a platoon...
So says the Red Sox' PR Twitter account (which is weirdly a protected account, so I can't link directly to the tweet).
Colbrunn is 43, and played 13 years in the bigs for seven teams on nine different stints. Despite his world-traveler status, he had a pretty decent career -- .799 OPS and .289 AVG, albeit during the steroid era. One potential concern? His OBP was just...
On a day dominated by the Yankees bringing back old guys, the Red Sox have their own bit of gossip, as Buster Olney tweets of Andrew Bailey's availability.
I would say this one ranks even lower in likelihood than the Lester-for-Myers rumor, mainly because Bailey's value is so low it's incomprehensible that the team would pawn him off.
Last year, the Red Sox acquired...
To the winners go the spoils, but the Oakland A’s are making us all feel like winners.
The A’s awarded a full playoff share worth $34,325.16 to charity on Monday, reportedly at the behest of new Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser, Gomes suggested that the A’s set aside a full share of their playoff winnings for charity...
The Red Sox announced that they have traded reliever Sandy Rosario to the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday for future considerations — either a player to be named later or cash.
A 27-year-old who spent the majority of 2012 toiling in Triple-A for the Miami Marlins, Rosario put together a pretty good campaign in the minors. The right-hander yielded just three runs in 26 innings...
The Red Sox acquired Andrew Bailey last winter in one of Ben Cherington's first moves as general manager. At the time, Boston was trying to replace Jonathan Papelbon, and had to do so on the limited budget that Cherington inherited fr...
The Boston Red Sox selected former major-league player Greg Colbrunn as their hitting coach. Colbrunn has chosen over Red Sox minor-league hitting coordinator Victor Rodriguez, former Arizona Diamondbacks hitting coach Rich Schu and Atlanta Braves assistatn hitting coach Scott Fletcher, The Boston Globe reported. He spent the past three years in the New York Yankees' minor...
According to reports out of Kansas City and Boston, the Royals have discussed trading outfield prospect Wil Myers to the Red Sox and Rays in deals that would net them Jon Lester or James Shields respectively. These discussions are the fruit of the Royals desire to upgrade a rotation that posted an ERA- of 122 as a group last year, the fourth worst mark of any club in baseball. ...
The world keeps spinning. The Red Sox offseason is spinning as well. The speed of both varies greatly. The Red Sox have met with free agent first baseman and catcher Mike Napoli while also signing outfielder Jonny Gomes. They will continue looking at other outfield options at the moment hoping that they can find [...]
About 11 months ago the Red Sox traded Josh Reddick to Oakland in exchange for Andrew Bailey. Now, Boston could be flipping the closer again.
Bailey’s fourth season in Major League Baseball was easily his worst, as the former All Star underwent thumb surgery during spring training and didn’t make his first appearance for the Red Sox until Aug. 14. Once he returned he was largely...
