It wasn’t an official announcement, but Magglio Ordonez is probably close to having a press release of some sort to announce his retirement from baseball, as it is becoming more and more unlikely that the Tigers, or any team for that matter, will opt not sign him to a Major League deal. He has already gone on record as saying he will not accept a minor league contract. Ordonez sees it on the wall as he Tweeted out a message in Spanish, yesterday:

Translation: Near my retirement!

Last season was one of Mags least productive seasons in the Majors, and had his season cut short because of an ankle injury, which ultimately cost him his starting job with Detroit. His numbers were very paltry, especially for an everyday player in a corner OF position, hitting just .252/.303/.331 with five home runs and 32 RBI in 92 regular-season games.

Magglio is probably one of the more under-appreciated players of his generation. He ranks 6th among “active” players in OPS at .871 (min 5000 plate appearances). He amassed 294 home runs, and that is with two seasons that were cut by more than half due to a severe knee injury. He was one of the best hitters in the game while he was the White Sox, but they cut bait with him once he got hurt. He was able to revitalize his career in Detroit, and became a fan favorite and star. He also ended up with one of the most dramatic home runs in the history of the ALCS.
