McGwire recently finished his third season as the Cardinals hitting coach, and they offered him a contract extension to stay with St. Louis. His offseason home is in Orange County in southern California with his wife and children, so that may be why he'd prefer to join the Dodgers. The Cardinals ranked second in the National League in team batting average and runs scored this past season. They won the World Series in 2011 and got to the N.L. Championship Series this year.
