Ryan Dempster was a name on Boston’s mind before the trade deadline last summer, but the Texas Rangers ended up scooping him up in their playoff push. Boston is now said to be interested in the right-hander the second time around. The Red Sox have “checked in” on Dempster, according to Alex Speier of WEEI. Dempster, 35, is said to want a three-year deal. Dempster moved from a bullpen role to starting with the Cubs in 2008 and has pitched 200 or more innings in each year since, except for last season. He’s gone 65-49 with a 3.74 ERA over those years and was 12-8 with a 3.38 ERA last season with the Cubs and Rangers.

Mike Adams Drawing Interest Despite Recovery From Surgery

Mike Adams probably had a shot as getting a contract extension from the Texas Rangers had he not gotten hurt.  Unfortunately, the dominant set-up man developed Thoracic Outlet Syndrome and had to undergo surgery this offseason.  The Rangers did not offer him and contract, and Adams is now a free agent.  Yet, he is drawing interest from teams this winter. ESPN's Jayson...

Rangers release spring training schedule

The Texas Rangers will spend plenty of spring training away from Surprise next year. The club released its full spring training schedule Tuesday and it includes a record 38 games for the Rangers. Five of those games will be outside Arizona as the club will play the Chicago Cubs March 16-17 in Las Vegas. Texas will close its exhibition slate with a game against the Mexico City...

Rangers have hands full this offseason

Every offseason, I get a headache trying to figure out what the Texas Rangers are doing. This offseason, that headache is approaching a migraine -- one that probably is afflicting club officials, too. On one hand, the Rangers are trying to re-sign free-agent outfielder Josh Hamilton and catcher/first baseman Mike Napoli. On the other hand, they're also engaged in active trade...

Shane Victorino and Platoon Panic

We have already run two pieces on Shane Victorino since he signed his new contract with Boston by Eno here and by Michael Barr at RotoGraphs. They are both fine pieces in their own right, but one issue that needs more discussion is Victorino’s platoon split. As people noted elsewhere in the signing’s aftermath (and analyzed in some detail earlier this season by Jack Moore),...

Mike Napoli Signing Allows Flexibility at Catcher for Red Sox, Added Power Bat in Lineup (Video)

Mike Napoli is receiving a lot of praise for his decision to come to Boston for the next three years. The catcher/first baseman signed a three-year contract with the Sox on Monday, and early reports have him slated to primarily play first base. The Boston Globe‘s Peter Abraham applauded the signing, and ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian believes that with a couple more solid signings, the...

Shane Victorino Shows Pride in New Team, Tweets Photos of Himself in Red Sox Hat (Photos)

It didn’t take long for the Flyin’ Hawaiian to get himself some new headwear. Shane Victorino, who reportedly inked a three-year deal with the Red Sox on Tuesday, immediately took to Twitter to express his excitement. On Wednesday, the veteran outfielder tweeted a photo of himself donning a new Sox lid. Victorino also retweeted a number of his Twitter followers, including pitcher...

2013 Red Sox Projections: Mike Napoli

The winter meetings are certainly here and a few of the free agents have already found new homes. The Red Sox made one of the bigger winter meeting moves thus far, signing C/1B Mike Napoli to a three-year deal. How does going from Texas to Boston affect Napoli's fantasy value? Mike Napoli - C/1B - BOS 2013 Age: 31 - Splits: Slight vs RHP 2013 Projection: 377...

Total Run Index Series: Boston Red Sox

2012 was a forgettable campaign for the Red Sox and their legion of fans. Much like a mentally ill patient with a dissociative disorder, the Red Sox did the best they could to shed themselves of those painful memories. They fired their manager and they traded away all of the players that supposedly caused problems in the clubhouse. They also cleared the deck for more big ticket free...

Mike Napoli’s Reported Signing With Red Sox Moves Young Rangers Fan to Tears (Video)

Professional sports are a business, a huge one at that. The sooner we, as sports fans learn that, the better off we are in life. Luckily for most of us, that moment when we find out that sports are all about the bottom line isn’t caught on tape. However, the younger generation is learning that hard lesson in a way that seems so cruel, yet so very funny. That’s what happens when...

Red Sox Spring Training Tickets Go on Sale Saturday Starting at Just $5

The Red Sox offseason hot stove is heating up, and that means spring training is getting closer. Tickets for 2013 Red Sox spring training games go on sale this Saturday, with 20 games at JetBlue Park at Fenway South available for purchase. Ticket prices are remaining at their 2012 levels and start at just $5. The Sox kick off their schedule on Thursday, February 21 with a single...

Rangers Sign Joakim Soria

Not exactly the biggest news of the winter meeting, but the Rangers agreed to sign Joakim Soria to a two year contract today, and Danny Knobler suggested that it would be in the $8-$9 million range, and Alden Gonzalez adds that Texas got a team option for a third year in the deal as well. This is a bit of an unorthodox move, as Soria had Tommy John surgery in April, and is unlikely...

Report: Shane Victorino Agrees to Three-Year Deal With Red Sox

The Red Sox have found their right fielder for 2013. Shane Victorino has agreed to a three-year contract with Boston, according to Alex Speier of WEEI. Victorino is expected to take over right field for the Red Sox, though he’s played the majority of his career in center. Victorino has 90 career home runs in his nine-year career, with 409 RBIs and 201 stolen bases. He’s a career...

Shane Victorino, Boston Right Fielder

It looks like Shane Victorino is going to get three years and $37.5 million from the Boston Red Sox… to be their right fielder. A year after most of his game showed decline, but his defense remained mostly intact, Victorino will be used at a position that is mostly known for bat-first guys. It’s not all that bad, though. For one, the current Red Sox centerfielder is only under...

Red Sox reach three-year deal with Mike Napoli

The Boston Red Sox have reached a three-year deal with catcher/ first baseman Mike Napoli, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports. In 352 at-bats, Napoli hit .227/343/.469 with 24 home runs and 56 RBIs while striking out 125 times. Napoli logged 72 games behind the plate (which is where he prefers to play), 28 games at first base and 9 games as the designated hitter. Image taken...

The Red Sox paid for an outfielder coming off a down year. Is it an extravagant risk?
