Matthew J. Lee/The Boston Globe/Getty Images BOSTON--  In what has been an interesting career  thus far for Red Sox relief pitcher Daniel Bard, the fireballer has suffered another setback. According to a tweet from Pete Abraham, the Red Sox beat writer for the Boston Globe, Boston has optioned Bard down to Double-A Portland to make room for primary closer Joel Hanrahan. Abraham tweeted the following earlier this afternoon. Daniel Bard optioned to AA Portland He then tweeted when Hanarahan is expected to be activated by the Red Sox. Presumably the #RedSox will activate Joel Hanrahan on Tuesday. He suffered a sore right hamstring injury back on April 3 against the Yankees, and Boston shut him down for a few days beginning on April 14 to deal with the injury. The Des Moines, Iowa native told the Globe that week that it had been bothering him, and that it was on his mind. It’s kind of been there in the back of my mind. I was hoping I could get through it,” Hanrahan said. “I’ve kind of p...

  • Should have let Aceves go and kept Bard. Bard is part of the future, Aceves isn't worth it

Daniel Bard completes successful return to Red Sox bullpen

Let me be the first person to say that when Daniel Bard took the mound in a 7-2 game in the 9th inning I was worried. I was not sure that he would be able to hold the 5 run lead that the Red Sox had worked so hard for the entire game. Given Bard's track record him blowing this lead would not be a surprise, what did occur though was quite the pleasant surprise. Bard was able to...

The Red Sox Really Will Try Anything to Fix Bard & Aceves

The Red Sox have resorted to having none other than The Spaceman, Bill Lee work with both Daniel Bard and Alfredo Aceves. The Red Sox have long had former soft-tosser and sports psychologist Bob Tewksbury on the payroll to work with players who may have mental or emotional issues, but hearing that the eccentric Lee is working with players in an official capacity is a bit surprising...

Who will ring the save bell for the Red Sox?

Sunday the Red Sox send Daniel Bard to Double A Portland, making room for Joel Hanrahan to return from the disabled list. It was a short stint for Daniel Bard and he only provided one inning of relief, giving up both a hit and a run. He was not really ready for the Majors as he had only eight appearances in Portland so far, but he was healthy and that was enough. Joel Hanrahan...

Daniel Bard Optioned Back To Double-A Portland

When Alfredo Aceves was sent down to Triple-A Pawtucket and Daniel Bard was called up from Double-A Portland, there was a part of us that all wanted to see Bard do well and maybe stick in the big leagues again. After all, he had been an integral part of the Boston Red Sox bullpen until last year when he struggled as a starting pitcher. Before his callup this year, he had been...

Daniel Bard Needs to Stop Thinking, Develop Some Cockiness Like Dennis Eckersley (Video)

The Red Sox have seen Daniel Bard struggle since coming up from Double-A Portland, and a Red Sox legend thinks the reliever just needs to bring some cockiness to his pitches. Jim Rice said Bard needs to be more like Dennis Eckersley and stop thinking so much on the mound. Rice said that will allow Bard to fire the ball like he used to and get his velocity back up in the 97 or 98...

Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan is back. The Red Sox activated the right-hander from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday and sent Daniel Bard to Double-A Portland to make room on the 25-man roster. Hanrahan, who is 0-1 with three saves and a 11.57 ERA, was on the disabled list since April 16 with a right hamstring strain.  He allowed two runs in two innings of rehab work with Triple...

Red Sox expected to return Hanrahan to closers role

When Joel Hanrahan returns from the disabled list from a sore hamstring the Red Sox are expected to return him to the closers role. Hanrahan’s return to the closers role is expected says Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, a move that could come as soon as Tuesday. Hanrahan is tentatively scheduled to pitch one inning at Triple-A on Sunday. During Hanrahan’s time away from the...

Your Morning Dump...where Hanrahan returns, Bailey ousted?

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. With Daniel Bard being sent back down to Double-A Portland, Joel Hanrahan is set to be activated prior to tonight's game in Toronto. However, the question remains: should Andrew Bailey be removed and...

Red Sox activate Joel Hanrahan from DL

"He's active today," Farrell said. "Before announcing what his role is, when he comes to the ballpark we'll have a chance to sit down. I...

Hanrahan Activated; Bailey to Close

The Red Sox activated Joel Hanrahan from the 15-Day Disabled List Tuesday before their game in Toronto. John Farrell determined in his pre-game press conference that Andrew Bailey, not Hanrahan, will close for the time being. Hanrahan, according to Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal, admired the way that Bailey handled the bullpen situation when Hanrahan was traded from the...
