Dave Dombrowski is going to look toward the San Diego Padres as he tries to find a replacement for Jim Leyland. According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, Dombrowski has interviews scheduled with former Tiger catcher Brad Ausmus, now a member of the Padres front office, and San Diego bench coach Rick Renteria. Ausmus played with the Tigers in 1996 and again in 1999-2000 as part of an odd rotation with the Astros. He was traded from Detroit to Houston after the 1996 season for, among other, Doug Brocail, and then was sent back to the Tigers after the 1998 season. Two years later, he and Brocail were both traded back to the Astros as part of the package that brought massive flop Mitch Meluskey to Detroit. Ausmus finished his playing career with the Dodgers in 2010 and was hired to work as an assistant in San Diego's front office. He has no coaching or managing experience other than a brief stint with Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic qualifying round this spring. Renteria was a long time minor-league utilityman who saw major-league action in five seasons. In only one of those -- 1993 with the Marlins -- did he play more than 31 games. Dombrowski was the general manager in Florida at the time, and Renteria stayed with the organization to become a minor-league coach and manager. He moved to the Padres organization in 2003 and has been with the major-league team since 2008. Like Ausmus, he managed in this year's World Baseball Classic, running Team Mexico.
