Boston Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz has been hospitalized with intestinal bleeding, according to multiple news sources.

The right-hander, who was placed on the 15-day disabled listed Saturday, is suffering from a gastrointestinal illness, according to the Boston Globe and WHDH-TV in Boston.

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said Buchholz, who was scratched from his Sunday start, is expected to recover. WHDH reported the bleeding was caused by anti-inflammatory drugs, like Ibuprofen.

"We're hoping that we'll get him back at the end of the 15 days," manager Bobby Valentine said. "He did check into a hospital. ... He hasn't been here now for two days."

Buchholz, who is 8-2 with a 5.53 ERA, has been placed on the DL for the third consecutive June. In 2010, a strained hamstring sidelined him and last season he was on the DL with a back problem.

Veteran right-hander Aaron Cook was recalled from Class AAA Pawtucket to make the Sunday start. Cook allowed six earned runs on eight hits and a walk in 2 2/3 innings in his only start with the Red Sox this season.
