Retired outfielder Randy Winn is getting an informal taste of coaching in the San Francisco Giants' farm system to see if it's something he would like to pursue on a full-time basis.
Winn joined the Class-A San Jose Giants on Monday - in a familiar black-and-orange uniform - for a few days after a cross-country flight from his family's home in Florida. He also has spent time with Class-A Augusta (Ga.) and the franchise's rookie level Arizona League club, and expects to visit AT&T Park when the reigning World Series champions return July 5 from their 10-game road trip that began Monday at Dodger Stadium.
''I'm helping in whatever capacity the team needs me, whether it's with outfielders or baserunning or bunting,'' Winn said, standing in the dugout at Municipal Stadium before the Class-A Giants got set to host the Colorado Rockies' California League affiliate from Modesto. ''I'll talk to them about the game, share my experiences. That's about it.''
