Aside from winning a World Series title, Wagner felt that playing in New York would help him record the 116 saves he needed to reach 400. That, and the increased visibility that came from playing with the Mets, would put him in good position to make the Hall of Fame.
But at the time, Wagner also calculated that he could arrive at the 400-save plateau within three years, at which point, he said Saturday, he might consider retiring a year before his four-year, $43 million contract was set to expire.
