For starters, our post title is a question, not a statement, because it all depends on which report you believe.  One thing is for sure; just when you thought a football-filled Sunday afternoon would yield a break in the ever turning Jose Reyes rumor mill, conflicting reports as to whether or not the free agent shortstop has agreed to a deal with the Miami Marlins have it churning.  According to Dino Costa of SiriusXM, the 28-year-old Reyes is a Miami Marlin:

According to various sources, JOSE REYES is a Miami Marlin. about 2 hours ago via webReplyRetweetFavorite @DINOCOSTA DINOCOSTA

This is just a radio host stating what his sources have told him, so there’s plenty of reason for doubt, especially when you consider some of the tweets that followed, one of which stated that the deal is contingent upon current Marlins shorstop Hanley Ramirez agreeing to make the move to third base:

Was just told that if Hanley Ramirez agrees to move to 3rd base this deal is done. about 1 hour ago via webReplyRetweetFavorite @DINOCOSTA DINOCOSTA

Costa certainly seemed to backtrack as he responded to fans on Twitter and signed off for the evening by saying:

@DhmkJp My last message until later this evening, read closely. Jose Reyes will sign with the Miami Marlins, IF, Hanley Ramirez moves to 3b. 18 minutes ago via webReplyRetweetFavorite @DINOCOSTA DINOCOSTA

When you consider the host in general, speculation as to the validity of his sources is certainly warranted:

Someone on XM is reporting that Jose Reyes is a Marlin. He also reported that the Mets signed Matt Holliday and named Wally Backman manager. about 1 hour ago via EchofonReplyRetweetFavorite @AmazinAvenue Eric Simon

Eric Simon of Amazin’ Avenue is right on the money in pointing out that Costa has been on the wrong end of bad reports about the Mets on more than one occasion (click here to read more).  To top it off, Joe Cappozzi, a Marlins beat writer for the Palm Beach Post, refuted the claim:

#Marlins source tells me Jose Reyes is NOT a Miami Marlin 49 minutes ago via webReplyRetweetFavorite @joecapMARLINS joe capozzi

It’s the battle of the sources….and while I doubt anything is near final, I do think it’s possible that something might be closer than most think.  We’ll stay on top of the news and see if anything with a little more bite to it breaks this evening, but for now we’ll join Steve Popper in getting back to football.

Back to football. RT: @MLBNetworkRadio: Contrary to reports, we are NOT reporting Reyes has signed with the #MiamiMarlins pending physical 8 minutes ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®ReplyRetweetFavorite @StevePopper Steve Popper
