During his days in Toronto, Alex Rios heard critics claim that he didn't care enough and that he didn't play hard all the time. Blue Jays fans might want to watch the replay of the Chicago White Sox's 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers on Monday, as Rios continued to show that his laid-back attitude had been interpreted incorrectly. The outfielder had what could prove to be the play of the year for the Sox, or at least the slide of the year. Rios broke up a potential inning-ending double play in the fifth inning, resulting in a throwing error by Tigers second baseman Omar Infante that allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score. The Sox ended up holding on for the win in the makeup game from last week, and they stretched their lead in the AL Central to three games over the second-place Tigers. With 16 games left, the Sox players know Monday's result was huge, especially because, at least on paper, Chicago has a tougher schedule, having to go to Kansas City and ...

M’s Travel Most, White Sox Travel Least Among AL Teams in 2013

The 2013 MLB schedule was released last week. On Thursday, my colleague Alex Remington addressed several issues raised by the schedule, most notably how season-long interleague play may affect how American League teams use their designated hitter. Alex also touched on the unbalanced schedule issue; that is, that teams within each division will play each other 19 times, thus resulting...

White Sox, Quintana ready for showdown with Tigers

The Chicago White Sox's bats are ready for the big one-game makeup with the Detroit Tigers on Monday, as the offense battered Minnesota pitching all weekend long, wrapping up with a 9-2 laugher Sunday that capped a three-game sweep of the Twins. That included another homer for Adam Dunn -- his 39th of the season -- as well as Dayan Viciedo homering for his 21st time and driving...

White Sox 9, Twins 2

Jake Peavy baffled Minnesota again, Dayan Viciedo and Adam Dunn homered, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Twins 9-2 on Sunday. The White Sox scored six runs in the sixth inning to support Peavy (11-11) and stay ahead of Detroit in the AL Central. The Tigers were playing Cleveland on Sunday and travel to Chicago for a makeup game on Monday. It will be the final time the two teams...

Ozzie Guillen's take on Yunel Escobar is Guillen-esque

In light of this afternoon's press conference with Yunel Escobar's three game suspension was announced (and Escobar claiming that his hairdresser and interior decorator were both gay), Ozzie Guillen was asked to weigh in by Shi Davidi, columnist for SportsNet in Canada. Guillen's comments were typical of him at this point. Ozzie Guillen on Escobar: In my house...

White Sox-Royals Preview

The Chicago White Sox took command of the AL Central by winning a makeup game over their closest challenger in their final meeting of the season. They know the race is far from over, however, especially with a series looming against a team that regularly gives them trouble. The White Sox hope to carry some momentum from an emotional win to Tuesday night's opener against a Kansas...

Error paves way as Tigers fall to White Sox

CHICAGO (AP) -- Omar Infante's throwing error on a potential double play helped Chicago scored two runs in the fifth inning Monday and the White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4 in a pivotal makeup game. Chicago increased its lead in the AL Central to three games. Nate Jones (8-0) pitched 2 2-3 innings of one-hit relief and the White Sox won their fourth straight. The game...

Tigers on the brink, fall to White Sox 5-4

The Chicago White Sox (80-66) topped the Detroit Tigers (77-69) with a final score of 5-4 in a pivotal makeup game, forcing the Tigers back three games in the American League Central Division. A missed double play in the fifth inning would be the difference maker, allowing the White Sox to capitalize and score the tie-breaking run. Detroit’s Doug Fister (9-9) pitched four innings...

Tigers-White Sox Preview

Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura doesn't want his players putting extra significance on their makeup game with the second-place Detroit Tigers. That seems unavoidable, however, seeing as it's the last meeting between the contenders. Before parting ways for the season, the White Sox try to push their lead over the Tigers to three games, while Detroit looks to pull...

Tigers throw away a second consecutive game

Have the Detroit Tigers literally thrown their playoff chances away? For the second consecutive day, Detroit's inability to complete a seeming routine double play played a key role in a loss. Two "not quite" midgame turns Sunday contributed to Detroit eventually losing 7-6 to the Indians in Cleveland. On Monday, an excellent takeout slide at second by the Chicago...
