Well, almost. It's September 7, 2012. The Yankees are in a flat-footed tie with the Baltimore Orioles. A tie that feels more like a 5-game deficit, one the Yankees cannot overcome. This team is on life-support. It's nearly time to perform their last rites.Don't call me a pessimist. I am NOT a pessimist. I am a REALIST. The Yankees ARE not getting it done and they WILL not get it done. Here's why:1) The pitching stinks. The starters are a mess. CC Sabathia has not distinguished himself this season.  Hiroki Kuroda has fallen off the pace. I need not mention the rest of the rotation, and don't even get me started on the bullpen. Counting on David Aardsma? His rehab start last night was less than effective. Andy Pettitte? Who's to say he'll be Andy Pettitte if and when he finally returns?2) The offense is isn't built for the stretch run, let alone the playoffs. You CANNOT depend on the home-run this time of year, but the Yankees are not adept at manufactur...

Cashman on Yanks Recent Struggles

From Chad Jennings:Before last night’s win put the Yankees back into sole possession of first place in the American League East, general manager Brian Cashman provided a pretty blunt assessment of what the Yankees had been doing for the past seven weeks and what they planned on doing for the next month. “We’re just not playing up to the best of our abilities, that’s all...

Yankees Game 139 Lineup: 9/8/12

C.C. and the rest of the Yankee lineup need to be pumped up for this game tonight and bring home a big win   Back on top in the AL East are the Yankees after a key win last night in Baltimore. It’s been a back and forth battle for them in the past week or so and for today, they maintain sole possession of first place in their division. The offense seems to be waking up slightly...

Arod Has Chance to be Hero

As a September to remember begins to unfold before us in Major League Baseball, the Yankees find themselves in an interesting position. After holding on to sole possession of the AL East for 84 days, they were tied with Baltimore for first place for one day. After a Baltimore loss and a Yanks win tonight, they now have a one-game lead, and hope to start a new streak atop the division...

David Robertson, or: Location, Location, Location

It was a really big deal when, on Tuesday, the Orioles beat the Blue Jays and the Yankees lost to the Rays, causing a tie atop the AL East standings. Just weeks earlier, the Yankees had had a ten-game advantage, and losing that kind of edge — to the Orioles! — was unimaginable. Then, Wednesday, the Orioles lost to the Blue Jays and the Yankees beat the Rays, restoring for New...

Yankees Game 136: Alone Atop The East

New York Yankees 6 — Tampa Bay Rays 4   After losing sole possession of 1st in the AL East, the Yankees take it back with tonight’s 6-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.   Like many starters recently, Hiroki Kuroda struggled to hold onto leads in tonight’s start. In 6 innings, Kuroda gave up 2 leads that he received. After having a 3-1 lead in the 4th inning, a 2-run triple by...

Yankees' Martin heating up at the right time

For weeks, manager Joe Girardi talked about how well Russell Martin was hitting the ball only to be foiled by the misfortune of hitting it at the opposing team's fielders. Wednesday, Martin kept the ball away from the Tampa Bay Rays. Girardi inserted Martin in the No. 5 hole against lefty Matt Moore, hoping to see some of those good swings manifest into big hits for the struggling...

Yankees Game 137: Horrendous 8th Creates Tie Atop East

New York Yankees 6 — Baltimore Orioles 10   After an outstanding comeback, an unbelievable response created tonight’s 10-6 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.   David Phelps started tonight’s game, a big series opener against the closest competition in the division. Phelps had a rough 1st inning as 4 of the 8 batters to come the plate scored, including a 3-run home run by Matt...

Yankees 6, Rays 4

New York went ahead with help from a key Tampa Bay error, Russell Martin homered and had three RBIs, and the Yankees regained sole possession of first-place in the AL East with a 6-4 win over the Rays on Wednesday night. Eliot Johnson's errant throw to home plate that led to two runs in the seventh inning helped New York win for just the fifth time in 15 games. New York sat...

Yankeetorial: Let them lose

This recent collapse has been as torturous as anything the CIA ever devised to deal with hippies. The Yankees have completely beaten down the spirit of their fan base. Lately, when Granderson or Swisher or Ibanez or Jones strike out, I rejoice in the thought that they will be gone soon, and I will never have to root for them again. It's gotten that bad.In 2004, it happened...

Martin leads the way as Yanks regain AL East lead with 6-4 win over Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The “master plan,” said Alex Rodriguez, is back “in order." A pre-game team meeting, a hard-fought win and an aggressive style of offense apparently did wonders for the New York Yankees on Wednesday, as they salvaged the final game of a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays, 6-4 at Tropicana Field and retook sole possession of first place...

Yankees Game 139: Controversy Clouds Ending

New York Yankees 4 — Baltimore Orioles 5   A controversial call ends a big night in a 5-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.   CC Sabathia struggled in tonight’s game as he gave up 5 runs on 8 hits, including 3 home runs. In the 2nd inning, the man that has hurt the Yankees all season, Mark Reynolds, got to the Yankees ace. For Reynolds, this was his 7th home run against the Yankees...
