New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera registered his 600th career save Tuesday night in Seattle.
Making his 1,037th career appearance, Rivera came on in the ninth inning to preserve a 3-2 lead and struck out Wily Mo Pena before Ichiro Suzuki singled.
Rivera struck out Kyle Seager and catcher Russell Martin threw out Ichiro trying to steal second to end it.
In reaching the milestone, the righthander moved within one of all-time leader Trevor Hoffman. With games Wednesday in Seattle and Friday in Toronto, Rivera could pass Hoffman before the weekend.
At 41, Rivera is not slowing down. He is 1-2 with 41 saves in 46 chances and a 2.05 ERA this season.
